An experienced aerospace executive, Dr. Tether founded The Sequoia Group as president and CEO in 2009, an organization that provides program management and strategy development services to government as well as the private industry. He was, from 2001 to 2009, the director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the Department of Defense where he was responsible for the management of the Agency's projects for high-payoff, innovative research and development. He previously served as the director of the organization's strategic technology office from 1982 to 1986 and the director of the National Intelligence Office in the Office of the Secretary of Defense from 1978 to 1982. Furthermore, Dr. Tether served as CEO of Dynamics Technology, Inc., vice president and general manager of Science Application International, Inc., and vice president for technology and advanced development at Ford Aerospace Corporation. He along with 6 others started a company after he graduated in 1969 from Stanford University developing Stochastic Real-Time Resource Allocation and Control Solutions for military and commercial system applications.
Dr. Tether began his career by first obtaining an Associate of Applied Science at Orange County Community College in Middletown NY, followed by a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Stanford University, where he earned a Master of Science and a PhD in Electrical Engineering. He has since served in various capacities on the U.S. Army, Navy and Defense, Science boards, on the Office of National Drug Control Policy Research and Development committees, and as a member of the board of regents and senior fellow of the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies.
A distinguished fellow of Council Competitiveness in Washington for the past nine years, Dr. Tether works alongside a team that works to shape policies and run programs to jump-start productivity and grow America's economy. He is a life member and fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, as well as a member of the Cosmos Club and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
As a respected voice in the field, he has contributed multiple articles to peer reviewed journals.
Throughout his career, Dr. Tether has received numerous honors and accolades for his achievements. He was the recipient of the National Intelligence Medal and Department of Defense Civilian Meritorious Service Medal, and an Outstanding Public Service Medal. In 2013, AIAA awarded him the Aerospace Communications Award for aerospace communication contributions.
Dr. Tether has been cited in several editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and in Wikipedia.
He is married with one daughter and son.
