CINCINNATI, OH, April 11, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present James Kaufman Lawrence, Esq., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Lawrence celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Lawrence is a seasoned attorney whose experience lies in labor and employment relations, alternative dispute resolution and negotiation. After serving as partner at Frost Brown Todd LLC in Cincinnati from 1970 to 2014, he has limited his practice to mediation and teaching dispute resolution. His extensive experience includes having defended unfair labor practice charges before the National Labor Relations Board and discrimination charges before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, advised on employment matters involving discrimination, disability and religious accommodation, family and medical leave, employment contracts and at-will employment, and managed mediation, collective bargaining, and two and multi-party negotiation. Prior to working at Frost Brown Todd, Mr. Lawrence spent five years as a trial attorney with the National Labor Relations Board at its Region 9 office.
One of Mr. Lawrence's noteworthy engagements in his legal career was when he represented the Cincinnati Board of Education resolving employee grievances, collective bargaining issues and strikes. Until 1984, Ohio did not have a public employee bargaining law or formal process, so Mr. Lawrence resolved disputes and concerted activity by developing working relationships with employee unions and their counsel. When Ohio's Ferguson Act that prohibited strikes was repealed and a public employee collective bargaining act was passed, Mr. Lawrence was prominently involved in the development of labor practice and procedure under that legislation.
Another challenging experience was his representation of two major league baseball clubs, the Cincinnati Reds and the Houston Astros during the early 1980s at the onset of final offer salary arbitration. He volunteers to represent nonprofit organizations in employment matters with Pro Bono Partners of Ohio receiving its 2018 Law Firm Attorney of the Year.
In addition to his many years in the courtroom, Mr. Lawrence has also dedicated substantial time and effort to academia, teaching negotiation and dispute resolution at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University, the University of Cincinnati College of Law, Xavier University, Otterbein College, Antioch University and The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. He also teaches at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Cincinnati. He is a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award from the University of Cincinnati in 1998 and 2008 and Ohio's Friend of Legal Education Award in 2003.
A longtime member of the National Council for The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law since 1974, the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers since 1999 and a member of the Cincinnati Citizens Police Association, 2013-18. Mr. Lawrence served in various other capacities within his community, including the FBI Citizens Academy, the Ohio Governor's Operations Improvement Task Force and the Center for Resolution of Disputes, Inc. During Mr. Lawrence's five decades of practicing law, he has been active with several professional organizations as a member of the American Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, the Cincinnati Bar Association and the Industrial Relations Research Association. He has also served as an editor for the "Pass the Gavel" newsletter and has contributed numerous articles to peer-reviewed journals.
Competing both an undergraduate and law degrees at The Ohio State University, Mr. Lawrence was admitted to the Bar of Ohio in 1965, the Southern District of Ohio of the U.S. District Court, and the Fourth and Sixth Circuits of the U.S. Court of Appeals. Married to George-Ann Adams since 1969 with two children, David and Catherine, he has been highlighted in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Mr. Lawrence has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
