An accomplished listee, Dr. Rutledge celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A professor emeritus of pharmacology, vice provost emeritus for research and dean emeritus of pharmacology in nursing and health sciences, who spent the last few years of his career as the vice president of research at Purdue University, Dr. Rutledge officially retired in 2008 after spending more than 40 years in his field. Prior to his 21 years at Purdue University, he spent 12 years as a professor and chairman of the pharmacology department at the University of Kansas and eight years as an assistant and associate professor at the University of Colorado Medical Center.
An active member with the American Association of Colleges and Pharmacy for many years, Dr. Rutledge was chairman of the Council of Faculties, chairman of the Council of Deans, and association president. He has also served on the Volwiler Award Committee, the Research and Graduate Affairs Committee, the Committee on the Present and Future Needs of the Council of Faculties, and the Academic Management System Organizing Committee, and he was a member of the Commission on Implementing Change in Pharmacy Education. Furthermore, he was the first chair of the Indiana Drug Utilization Review Board.
A registered pharmacist in Kansas and Indiana, Dr. Rutledge first earned a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy and a Master of Science in pharmacology at the University of Kansas, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmacology at the prestigious Harvard University. He then completed a one-year NATO postdoctoral fellowship at Gothenburg University in Sweden from 1966 to 1967. Since earning his degrees, his research has included the establishment of a model for studying the mechanism by which amphetamine releases biogenic amine neurotransmitters from nerve endings. He has also conducted studies on the biochemical-behavioral correlations in the use of levodopa for the treatment of Parkinsonism, as well as studies that involve an examination of the lipid micro-environment of nerve endings as a determinant of the activity of proteins involved in neurotransmission.
Dr. Rutledge has been credited with authoring and co-authoring more than 150 peer reviewed articles and abstracts in the area of neuropharmacology and pharmacy education in such journals as the American Journal of Pharmacological Education. He has also contributed several chapters to books by other authors, was field editor for the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and editor of Biogenic Amines. Dr. Rutledge has been a member of two National Institute of Mental Health review committees and the National Institute of General Medical Science pharmacological sciences review committee, which reviews training grants in the pharmacological sciences.
A longstanding member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and the American Association of Colleges and Pharmacy, where he has served in a number of capacities, Dr. Rutledge has also lectured in his field on numerous occasions. The recipient of a National Institutes of Health grant from 1970 to 1987, he has been highlighted in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1989, as well as many more editions of Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
Attracted to the profession of pharmacy by his interest in chemistry and biology and a strong desire to help people, Dr. Rutledge was inspired by several mentors throughout his school years, including Otto Krayer, the chairman of the department at Harvard University. Dr. Rutledge had the opportunity to participate in a laboratory rotation with Dr. Krayer, who taught him all the techniques of the pharmacologists and physiologists in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s which were used to explore the actions of drugs on various biological systems. Now fully enjoying his retirement years later, Dr. Rutledge, who has been married to his wife Jane Ellen Crow for over 50 years and is the proud father of four children and grandfather of 10 grandchildren, enjoys skiing, traveling and working in his garden.
