AMHERST, VA, April 13, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Ronald E. Horwege, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Horwege celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A staple at Sweet Briar College in Virginia for 43 years, Dr. Horwege is now a fully retired foreign language professor who taught German on campus. First hired in 1971, he worked his way up to full professor by 1985 and continued to lead the program until the college decided to abolish it in 2014. Dr. Horwege also spent time initiating the exchange program with the University of Heidelberg while on campus and partnered with Vassar College and the College of William and Mary in managing multiple summer programs in Münster, Germany, between 1990 and 2006.
Although Dr. Horwege didn't initially plan on becoming a teacher, after traveling to Germany as a freshman on a summer program, he had such an enjoyable experience that he fell in love with the language and culture and wound up pursuing additional degrees as a result. Going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in German and history, cum laude, at the University of Kansas in 1966, Dr. Horwege then worked toward his master's degree, earning a Master of Arts in Germanic linguistics in 1968 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Germanic linguistics with minors in German literature and Scandinavian studies in 1971, both at Indiana University. While pursuing his bachelor's degree, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa; Delta Phi Alpha, the German honor society; and Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society.
Dr. Horwege was the first recipient of a Sweet Briar Cameron Fellow between 2004 and 2014. He was also the recipient of the very first Ronald Horwege Award of Outstanding Service in 2012, which was founded in his honor, and granted by the Virginia chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). A chapter president for the organization between 1978 and 1980, and again between 1992 and 1994 and 2000 and 2005, the Goethe-Institut awarded him with a Certificate of Merit several years prior in 2003. In addition to serving in those capacities with the AATG, Dr. Horwege was the president of the Foreign Language Association of Virginia, where he received an Outstanding Educator Award in 2003 and is a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus.
Involved in his local community for many years, Dr. Horwege was a cubmaster with the Boy Scouts of America during the mid- to late 1980s, was a scoutmaster for several years thereafter, and was on the board of directors for the Virginia Skyline Council Girl Scouts. He also spent many years as an academy judge for the Junior Miss Competition beginning in 1982. Married for more than 45 years to his wife, Sandra Jean Srella, with two children and one grandchild, Dr. Horwege enjoys camping, hiking and travelling, as well as collecting books and stamps. He has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Ronald E. Horwege, Ph.D., has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
