Dr. Seidelmann is an astronomer and research professor who has been teaching in the department of astronomy at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, since 2000. He formerly spent 25 years as a department and directorate director at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, DC. He was involved in astrometry with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field/Planetary Camera Team. A leader in the international revisions of reference systems, he also directed the modernizing of the almanacs and the introduction of electronic almanacs.
Maintaining research interests in astrometry, solar system astronomy, time, reference systems, space missions, and celestial mechanics, Dr. Seidelmann co-discovered the Saturn satellite Calypso, calculated the analemma for the Longwood Gardens Sundial, and prepared the star charts for the Einstein Statues on the National Academy of Sciences grounds in both Washington and Jerusalem. A former member of the Wide Field/Planetary Camera Team of the Hubble Space Telescope, former chair of the Science Team of the Full Sky Astrometric Mapping Explorer, former president of Division I of the International Astronomical Union and the Institute of Navigation, where he received a Norman P. Hays Award in 1992, and former secretary and president of the Division on Dynamical Astronomy for the American Astronomical Society, Dr. Seidelmann is a longstanding member of the American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Omicron Delta Kappa, and a fellow of the Institute of Navigation, Royal Astrono¬mical Society, and American Association for the Advancement of Science, where he was the co-recipient of an International Science Research Cooperation Award in 2005.
Dr. Seidelmann was a visiting associate professor and visiting professor at the University of Maryland and served as the president of the Celestial Mechanics Institute from 1986 to 2016. During his impressive career in the sciences, he also wrote extensively, contributing more than 100 articles to various peer-reviewed journals, co-editing many books, including the "Explanatory Supplement to the Astronomical Almanac" in 2012, co-authoring "Fundamentals of Astrometry", "Time: From Earth Rotation to Atomic Physics" and "Celestial Mechanics and Astrodynamics: Theory and Practice."
P. Kenneth Seidelmann hosted the US Russian Orbit determination and Prediction Workshop in 1994. He has been the General Chairman of the second (1996), third (1998), fourth (2000), fifth (2003), sixth (2005), seventh (2007), eighth (2010), and ninth (2012) US/Russian Space Surveillance Workshops. He was the General Chairman of the US China Space Surveillance Technical Interchanges in 2009, 2011, and 2013.
Receiving an Electrical Engineering degree and a Master's degree and Doctor of Philosophy degree in dynamical astronomy at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Seidelmann later received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Cincinnati's Engineering College. In honor of his achievements, a minor planet, number 3217, was named "Seidelmann" in his honor. Notably, Dr. Seidelmann also served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army's Missile Command from 1963 to 1965, where he was an R/D Coordinator and directed initial research in laser and optical missile guidance systems.
Married to his loving and supportive wife Roberta (Bobbie) Jane Buck since 1960 with two children and two grandchildren, Dr. Seidelmann was formerly involved in his local community by serving as the president of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Bethesda, MD, and as the chairman of the building committee. Honored for his dedication to the field, he has been cited in nearly every edition of Who's Who in America since 2007, as well as the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and American Men and Women of Science.
