Mr. Portman is incredibly involved in his professional community, having held civic roles including assistant editor-in-chief for the Southwestern Law Journal, member of the executive board for the Southern Methodist University School of Law, lecturer of bankruptcy for the South Texas College of Law, and chairman of fundraising, admissions and the class agent program for the Southern Methodist University Law Alumni Association. Mr. Portman became involved in his field because of his dual interests in law and business. Before establishing himself professionally, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Case Western Reserve University in 1968 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Southern Methodist University in 1975. Thereafter, he became certified to practice law in the state of Texas. In addition, he is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Northern, Southern, Western and Eastern Districts of Texas and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. To remain abreast of changes within his field, Mr. Portman maintains memberships with the American Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute, the State Bar of Texas, the Dallas Bar Association, the Turnaround Management Association and the Southern Methodist University Law Alumni Association.
