A retired elementary school educator of four decades, Ms. Graves taught first, second, third, fourth and fifth graders at schools in North Carolina and Virginia. First hired at Hope Valley Elementary School in Durham, NC in 1971, she then taught at Alanton Elementary School in Virginia Beach, VA, and North Springfield Elementary School and Hunt Valley Elementary School in Springfield, VA, where she concluded her career in 2010.
Ms. Graves' career earned her a Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Contribution, Dedication and Commitment to Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorders of Northern Virginia in 1994. She was also named Teacher of the Year at Alanton Elementary School, which was granted by the Virginia Beach Public Schools for the 1976-1977 academic school year.
Ms. Graves served in many different professional capacities during her tenure. She served on the school planning committee for both science and language arts for Fairfax County Public Schools, was a lead mentor teacher, colleague (mentor) teacher, science lead teacher, team leader for grade level, and mainstream teacher for learning disabled, autistic and ESOL students.
Long affiliated with many professional organizations Ms. Graves was an active member of the International Reading Association, the Greater Washington Reading Council, the Virginia State Reading Association, the Virginia Beach Education Association, the Fairfax Education Association, the Virginia Education Association, the National Education Association, and the American Federation of Teachers. Ms. Graves was inducted into the George Mason University Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa International.
Born in Takoma Park, MD, Ms. Graves later earned a bachelor's degree at Elon University in North Carolina in 1970 and became a certified teacher of elementary education in North Carolina. She married her husband George William Graves in 1977 and then taught in Virginia and was certified in Virginia. She has one daughter and one step-son. Enjoying crafts and yoga in her free time, Ms. Graves has been showcased in more than 10 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
