Ms. Detwiler is recognized for her work as a special needs educator. She retired from her professional career in 2013. She has served as a substitute teacher at the Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Catholic Elementary School since retirement. She previously acted as an elementary school teacher at the Walton Farm Elementary School from 1996 to 2013. She also served the North Penn School District as a Learning Support teacher and Co-Teaching Inclusion teacher from 1999 to 2013 and as a program teacher at the Annual Young Authors' Conference from 1998 to 2013. She also served the North Penn School District as a Special Education teacher from 1990 to 1999 and as an Instructional Assistant in Special Education from 1983 to 1990. Ms. Detwiler has taught in Learning Support, Emotional Support, Physically Handicapped, Gifted classes during her 30 years at the North Penn School District.
Ms. Detwiler graduated with a Master's degree in Education from the University of Arts, Philadelphia, in 1994. She also holds a Bachelor of Science Degree Cum Laude, in Special Education from the Gwynedd-Mercy University since 1990 and an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education, Summa Cum Laude, from the Montgomery County Community College since 1985. She is certified to practice as a teacher for the mentally or physically handicapped in the state of Pennsylvania. Ms. Detwiler has served as a lecturer in Pennsylvania and in Japan and has implemented various educational programs over the course of her career, which includes her role as instructor of the visualizing and verbalizing program of the Lindamood-Bell Learning Process. She has also contributed to professional journals and newspapers and has served as a freelance writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer, contributing essays on the following topics: education, family, death, politics, childhood, writing, race relations, and the elderly from 1997 through 2018.
Ms. Detwiler has contributed to community education with her creation and implementation of "Mime and Sign," a sign language class, "Classical Music Appreciation for Primary-Aged Students," and "Heroes" for intermediate level students to encourage responsible decisions regarding alcohol, for the Montgomery and Bucks County, PA schools. Ms. Detwiler collaborated with the U.S. Dept. of Transportation to produce Public Service Announcements for their 1999 "Innocent Victims Campaign" to prevent drunk driving. Ms. Detwiler initiated and directed the Annual Ben Detwiler Memorial Writing Award from 1992 through 2017 for juniors at North Penn High School to promote journalistic writing and in memory of her son, Ben, killed by a drunk driver in 1991. Ms. Detwiler served on the North Penn Community Forum Committee to develop and promote ongoing educational events to benefit families (2004—2009) with responsibilities including photographing/reporting all events for historical archives and public relations releases.
Alongside the contributions she has made throughout her career in education, Ms. Detwiler has been civically engaged with a number of organizations. She is a volunteer in Reading and Written Expression at Drexel Neumann Academy, in Chester, PA since 2015 and a volunteer Play Therapist with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia since 2014. She also served as a tour guide narrator with the Independence National Historical Park from 1987 to 1990. She is a member of the the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Center for Photography, and the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to her community, she was named into the Hall of Fame with the Montgomery County Community College in 2004. She was also honored as a grantee of the North Penn Community Health Foundation and the North Penn School District Educational Foundation, receiving over 13 grants for varied programs to educate children. She was a scholarship recipient from the Lansdale Business and Professional Women's Club and the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation, while attending Gwynedd-Mercy University. Ms. Detwiler was a finalist in Photographer's Forum Magazine's 27th Annual College Photography Contest with her photo published in Best of College Photography Annual 2007, Serbin Communications, Santa Barbara, CA. Ms. Detwiler's photography was chosen for the Keuka Lake Association Calendar (New York) for May, 2018.
Ms. Detwiler was born in Philadelphia, PA, to Frederick Lawrence Wendler, Jr. and Eileen Casey Wendler. She has two children, B.R. Brendan Jr. and the late Benjamin Jonathan. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, photography, writing for children, kayaking, biking, Bible study, and reading.
