With more than 35 years of professional experience, attorney-author Ann Zeigler most recently received the 2016 Business Book of the Year Award for "Preserving Electronic Evidence for Trial: A Teamwork Approach" (Elsevier Syngress), from the New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards, the largest regional book competition in the southwestern United States. She is currently working on a follow-up technical reference volume, "The Field Investigator's Guide to Electronic Evidence" with Ross Leo of the University of Houston Cyber-Security Institute, as well as a collection of tips for individuals encountering the legal system, "100 Tips Lawyers Wish You Knew." Ms. Zeigler's debut mystery novel, "Hobby of Corpses" was the only genre finalist for the 2017 David Morrell Prize for New Fiction. Ms. Zeigler is an inactive-status member of the State Bar of Texas. She most recently served as senior consultant at Third Coast Consultants, LLC, from 2010 to 2012. Prior to that appointment, she was on the faculty of the Southern Trial Skills Program with the National Institute for Trial Advocacy in 2010, of counsel with Nelson S. Ebaugh, PC, from 2009 to 2010, an associate with the bankruptcy section and chapter seven trustee representative with Hughes, Watters & Askanase from 1990 to 2008, and a District 4 Investigator with the Committee on the Unauthorized Practice of Law for the Supreme Court of Texas. Previously, she served as an associate with Dow, Cogburn & Friedman from 1987 to 1990, an independent project attorney in 1987, and an associate with Dula, Shields & Egbert from 1984 to 1987. Ms. Zeigler was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Texas in 1984, and thereafter in the four federal districts of Texas as well as the Fifth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. After representing a publicly-traded company in a bankruptcy reorganization, Ms. Zeigler developed a specialized practice investigating financial fraud. Ms. Zeigler was a co-writer of the briefs on a matter of first impression in the Circuit. While in practice in Texas, Ms. Zeigler passed the Canadian national examinations leading to a certificate equivalent to a law degree for British Columbia, Canada, entitling her to apply for legal employment through the provincial Law Society's clerkship program. Ms. Zeigler also traveled extensively in rural China with Earthwatch scientific field teams and with groups of artists, after several years of tutoring Chinese professionals in English.
Ms. Zeigler began her writing and educational career at Fort Wright College, a women's college in Spokane, Washington, where she edited the literary magazine and wrote a column for the college's outreach magazine. One of Zeigler's satirical poems was entered into the record of an appeal to the Washington state supreme court, and one of her "From Solitary" columns was entered into the Congressional Record in 1968. Ms. Zeigler received a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude in 1969. She received a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in 1975 from the University of Montana. Her thesis work was the libretto to a science-fiction opera with award-winning composer Sherman Himelblau, which received a professional performance. From 1973 to 1974 Ms. Zeigler worked as a school librarian on the Rocky Boys Chippewa-Cree Indian Reservation in Montana. She attended the University of Houston College of Law from 1980-84, during which she was the course administrator for the legal communications program from 1982 to 1984, and executive editor of the Houston Journal of International Law from 1983 to 1984. She received a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1984.
A respected voice in the field, Ms. Zeigler has been a co-editor on several publications for Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts, including "Insurance Guide: Arts and Nonprofits" in 1993, "Basic Issues in Estate Planning-Representing the Artist" in 1994, and "Leading the Arts Nonprofit: Duties of Officers and Directors" in 1999. She has also been in multiple positions with Houston Lawyer, serving on the editorial board from 1999 to 2011, as editor-in-chief from 2009 to 2010, as articles editor from 2008 to 2009, and as guest editor in 2000, 2001, and 2003. She was also honored for Best Series of Articles in a statewide competition for her two-part series on the 2005 bankruptcy code amendments published in The Houston Lawyer magazine.
As both attorney and author, Ms. Zeigler has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. In addition to mandatory membership in the State Bar of Texas, Ms. Zeigler has been a member of Phi Alpha Delta International legal fraternity, the American Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Houston Bar Association, including chairing the HBA's Law and the Arts Committee from 1996 to 1997 and co-chairing the HBA short fiction contest from 1997 to 1998. She has been a member of Mystery Writers of America, including the Southwest Chapter, where she was program director from 2008 to 2013, and the Rocky Mountain Chapter, where she is presently New Mexico state board representative. She is also an active member of the Croak & Dagger (New Mexico) Chapter of Sisters in Crime, where she was president in 2017, and currently the coordinator for a statewide outreach program to put C&D members' books on display in local libraries. She is a 2009 graduate of the Houston Police Department's Citizens Academy, and worked from 2009 to 2013 as a civilian volunteer with the department's Juvenile Sex Crimes Unit. Ms. Zeigler also graduated in 2009 from the FBI Houston Field Office's Citizens Academy, and served variously as its alumni association's corporate secretary, vice president and a director between 2009 and 2013.
As reflected in the accolades and experiences listed above, among others, Ms. Zeigler has also been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
