A dedicated health care professional and Professor Emerita of New York University College of Nursing, Dr. Hoskins worked tirelessly in her field for over six decades. Focusing the last 28 of those years as a principal investigator of a three-phase program of breast cancer research at New York University (NYU) in New York City, she also served as a senior research scientist on campus beginning in 2003. Now in retirement, she looks back on her career as something she has enjoyed tremendously.
First hired by NYU as an assistant professor of nursing in 1977, Dr. Hoskins was later promoted to associate professor and finally full professor of nursing by 1987. Between 1985 and 1990, she also served as the director of the Ph.D. program in nursing. Prior to entering academia, she spent three years as a public health nurse with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York in New York City. Dr. Hoskins holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Cornell University, followed by a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from NYU. She received an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens in Greece in 1998. In addition, Dr. Hoskins taught in five other countries, working to improve their nursing education and treatment.
Dr. Hoskins is the co-author of two books, "Research in Nursing and Health: Quantitative and Qualitative Methods" in 2004 and "Breast Cancer: Journey to Recovery" in 2001. She is also the principal author of a four-part video series called "Journey to Recovery: For Women with Breast Cancer and Their Partners," which was released in 2002. Furthermore, she has contributed numerous articles to professional journals throughout her tenure.
Locally involved as a former case manager for the American Red Cross Family Emergency Relief Services for 9/11, Dr. Hoskins is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and longstanding member of the American Nurses Association, the Fulbright Association and Sigma Theta Tau.
A senior Fulbright scholar in 1995, Dr. Hoskins received an ongoing grant from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Nursing Research. She also received a Fulbright Senior Specialist Award in 2003. In 2017, Dr. Hoskins was recognized for donating funds to support the Rory Meyers College of Nursing at NYU to support nursing research, education and practice and to assist in providing financial assistance for students, recruiting distinguished faculty and developing innovative solutions to emerging needs in health care. Notably, she has been cited in the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the World, as well as several editions of Who's Who in America. Married to her husband Dr. Donald William Hoskins since 1955, she has three children (Lauren Hoskins Lingley, MD, David William Hoskins, JD, and Bruce Noll Hoskins, DVM) six grandsons and two granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter. She enjoys swimming, skiing, gardening and quilting in her spare time.
