Prior to these appointments, Dr. Kornai held the positions of senior researcher for the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Research Institute for Linguistics from 1990 to 2001, principal scientist for Belmont Research (later PPD Informatics) from 1999 to 2000, senior scientist for BBN Technologies from 1997 to 1998, research staff for the Research Division of IBM from 1993 to 1997, and staff engineer for Calera Recognition Systems, Inc., from 1991 to 1993. Previously, he was a consultant for the Electronic Documents Laboratory at the Palo Alto Research Center Incorporated from 1988 to 1991, a researcher for the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Research Institute for Linguistics from 1986 to 1990, a consultant for Mad Intelligent Systems, Inc., in 1990, and a junior researcher for the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Institute for Computer Science and Control from 1981 to 1986.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Kornai pursued an education at Eötvös Loránd University, earning a Master of Science in mathematics, summa cum laude, in 1981. He followed this accomplishment with a Doctor Universitatis in mathematics (algebra) in 1983, also at Eötvös Loránd University. He concluded his studies at Stanford University, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in linguistics in 1991. In 2001, Dr. Kornai received a doctorate from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Kornai's success extends to his work as an invited speaker at such academic events as the 16th Annual Conference of Applied Linguistics in 2017, the International Workshop on Computational Linguistics for Uralic Languages in 2016, the Ugra Global Expert Meeting on Multilingualism in Cyberspace in 2015, and the International Conference on Linguistic and Cultural Diversity in Cyberspace in 2014. He has also served as a program chair and on the program committee for several professional workshops between 1995 and 2015, as well as a featured speaker for META-FORUM in 2012 and for Knowledge University in 2011. Earning the title of full professor at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 2014, Dr. Kornai was previously recognized as an honorary professor at the institution from 2003 to 2013, and he habilitated there in applied mathematics in 2006.
A lecturer for the European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information in 1992 and 2001, Dr. Kornai was a senior consultant for the Dartmouth Metalearning Group on an award from the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity from 2009 to 2010 and a senior consultant on a joint award from the National Science Foundation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency from 2003 to 2004. Dr. Kornai served on the tenure committee in the Department of Linguistics at Stanford University in 1990 and the ad hoc group for ontology standards for ANSI X3T2 from 1996 to 1997.
Contributing more than 80 articles to the proceedings of conferences and workshops in his field between 1984 and 2017, Dr. Kornai has authored numerous written works published in such esteemed journals as PLoS ONE, Linguistic Inquiry, Language, the Journal of Logic, Language, and Information, and Acta Linguistica, among several others. Serving on the editorial board for Formal Grammars since 1998, he has also penned such books as "On Hungarian Morphology" in 1994, "Formal Phonology" in 1995 (second edition 2018), "Mathematical Linguistics" in 2007, and "Semantics" in 2018. He has also held the roles of guest editor for the Journal of Natural Language Engineering and area editor, Mathematic Linguistics, for the Oxford International Encyclopedia of Linguistics. Dr. Kornai edited several books and conference proceedings, including Extended Finite State Models of Language (Cambridge University Press 1999), Mathematics of Language (2011, 2013), and the Analysis of Geographic References (2003).
Dr. Kornai remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained membership with the Association for Computational Linguistics, ACM, Inc., Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, the János Bolyai Mathematical Society, the John von Neumann Computer Society, and the Bay Area OCR Interest Group, where he was a founding member. He is actively involved with the Association for Computational Linguistics, where he has served on the executive committee for the computational phonology special interest group in 1997, the finite-state methods and natural language processing special interest group in 2001 to 2003 and its advisory board since 2010. He was the president of the mathematics of language special interest group from 2011 to 2013. A senior member of the IEEE, Dr. Kornai is also on the advisory board of YourAmigo PLC since 2002, and the program committee for various Association for Computational Linguistics and Language Resources and Evaluation Conference workshops.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Kornai has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. A visiting scholar with Harvard University from 2009 to 2010, he has received grants from Erasmus+ since 2017, OTKA 2010 to 2013 and 2016-2019, Linguistic Data Consortium from 2006 to 2007 and from 2015 to 2018, SIL International from 2015 to 2016, and INFRA2 from 2015 to 2016. A visiting scholar with the department of computer science at Rice University from 1992 to 1994, he has also been a grantee of FuturICT from 2013 to 2014, the National Science Foundation from 2010 to 2013, the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund from 2004 to 2006, and the Hungarian Ministry of Telematics from 2003 to 2005. A recipient of the Distinguished Scientist Award from ACM, Inc., in 2009, he was the recipient of a fellowship from Stanford University from 1986 to 1990, the Linguistic Society of America in 1987, the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research in Austria in 1983 and 1986, and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from 1983 to 1986. Furthermore, Dr. Kornai has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
