Franz Palm, Ph.D., Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

With more than 45 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Palm has worked as a professor of econometrics at Maastricht University since 1985. Prior to this appointment, he held the positions of professor of econometrics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam from 1980 to 1985, associate professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam from 1977 to 1979, and research associate for the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago from 1972 to 1974. Dr. Palm began his career as a research associate in econometrics with the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics at the Catholic University of Louvain from 1971 to 1972 and from 1974 to 1977.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Palm pursued an education at the Catholic University of Louvain, earning a master's degree in economics in 1971. Dr. Palm concluded his studies at the Catholic University of Louvain in 1974, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in economics.

Beyond his efforts within the field, Dr. Palm has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. From 2006 to 2013 Dr. Palm has been honoured by an Academy Professorship in Econometrics funded by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has served as a visiting professor at the University of Chicago in 1990, and the Catholic University of Louvain from 1987 to 1989. He has also found much success with his written works, having authored "Economic Modeling" in 1991, co-authored "The Structural Econometric Time Series Analysis Approach" in 2004, and contributed articles to esteemed journals in the fields of time series and longitudinal data analysis, macroeconomics, finance and innovation. Dr. Palm has been the founding editor of the Journal of Empirical Finance from 1991 to 2014, editorial board member of De Economist from 1990 to 2010, associate editor for the Journal of Econometrics from 1988 to 2016 and associate editor for the Journal of Business & Economic Statistics from 1981 to 1992.

In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Palm remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has contributed to the European Economic Association in several capacities, including as chair of the Standing Committee on Student Affairs from 1990 to 1993 and on the council from 1995 to 2000. From 1984 to 1995, he was a regional consultant with the Econometric Society. Furthermore, Dr. Palm is the board chairman of the Economic Development Society of East Belgium.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Palm has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. Most recently, he has been honored as a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion from the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2015, with an Academy Professorship from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences already mentioned, and with the eponymous honor of the Franz Palm Lecture Hall at the Maastricht School of Business and Economics in 2017. Being elected foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2000, Dr. Palm was awarded a Doctorate Honoris Causa from University of Fribourg in 2009. He was recognized as a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University, a Visiting Scholar at Université de Montréal, a Fellow of the Center for Economic Research-IFO Munich, a Fellow of the European Economic Association, and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.

From 1971 to 1975, Dr. Palm was a grantee of the National Science Foundation in Belgium. He would later be a frequent grantee of the Netherlands Science Foundation and of European Union Programs. In 1972, he was honored as a Fulbright grantee and a Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York Fellow in Brussels, Belgium. Dr. Palm was also selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in the World.
