An esteemed publisher, anthropologist and educator, Dr. De Voe has accrued more than 35 years of experience in the education and publishing industries. She was an assistant professor at St. Louis University in 2001. Over the years, she has simultaneously been part of the adjunct faculty at St. Louis Community College since 1980 and Webster University from 2000 to 2005. She served as Community Connections Manager at the International Institute of St. Louis from 2003 to 2008, the information specialist at St. Louis Community College from 1999 to 2001, the English as a Second Language Parent Coordinator at St. Louis Public Schools from 1998 to 1999, and an independent consultant from 1982 to present.
In preparation for her prolific career, Dr. De Voe first obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1969, followed by a Master of Arts from the University of Missouri in 1972. She subsequently earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Arizona in 1979, as well as completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Missouri between 1980 and 1982. Dr. De Voe maintains affiliation with numerous industry-related organizations, including on the Committee on Refugees and Immigrants with the American Anthropological Association which she co-founded in 1988. Additionally, she was the President and Vice President of the Asian Art Society from 1996 to 1999, on the board of directors of the Asian Art Society from 1993 to 2001, a board member for the General Anthropology Division of the American Anthropological Association from 1992 to 1996, and on the Committee on Refugee Issues with the American Anthropological Association in 1986 to 1988.
Alongside her endeavors as an educator and anthropologist, Dr. De Voe has also lent her expertise as an accomplished novelist. Under P.A. De Voe, penning such works as "Trapped" in 2017, "Warned" in 2016, "Hidden" in 2015, and "A Tangled Yarn" in 2013. She is most recognized for her "Mei-hua Adventure Trilogy" and "The Judge Lu Case Files" short stories. She recently launched her newest novel entitled "Deadly Relations, a Ming Dynasty Mystery" in 2018. Furthermore, she has served as an editor and contributor of articles to professional journals.
In recognition of her exceptional achievements, Dr. De Voe has been awarded numerous accolades throughout her career. She was an Agatha and Silver Falchion finalist in 2017 for the third novel" Trapped" in the "Mei-hua Adventure Trilogy," and received the Silver Falchion Award in the Best International Mystery Book category in 2016 for her novel "Warned". In addition, she was a grantee of the Missouri Humanities Council for 1989-1990, a recipient of the U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays for Doctoral Dissertation Grant in 1977-1978, a Post-Doctorate Fellow for the University of Missouri from 1980 to 1982, and a teaching fellow for the University of Arizona from 1976 to 1977, and she was a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Russia in 2013.
Married to Ronald E. Mertz since 1971, Dr. De Voe has one daughter, Renée. In her spare time, she enjoys reading poetry, spinning wool, and sewing teddy bears out of vintage fur coats.
