For 10 years, Dr. Riviello has devoted his career to advancing the field of global surgery and addressing the surgical workforce crisis facing low-income countries. Currently, he works as an assistant professor of surgery and an assistant professor of global health and social medicine at the prestigious Harvard Medical School, as well as an associate surgeon for the Brigham and Women's Hospital. Additionally, he works in executive roles for the U.S. Academic Consortium for the Rwandan Human Resources for Health and the Center for Surgery and Public Health at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Furthermore, he works as an ad hoc reviewer for the World Journal of Surgery, the Annals of Surgery, and the Journal of Surgical Education.
As an expert in the field, Dr. Riviello holds a Bachelor of Arts in biology and a Master of Public Health in population and international health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, as well as a Doctor of Medicine from the University of California (UC), San Diego. His professional affiliations include the New England, Rwanda, and International Surgical Societies, the American Burn Association, the American College of Surgeons, the Association of Academic Surgeons, and the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa. Throughout his years in the field, he has been awarded many times for his professional accomplishments. Earlier in his career, he won the Roderick K. Calverly Humanitarian Service Award through UC San Diego and various awards for excellence in teaching from Vanderbilt University. Most recently, he has won the Joseph E. Murray and Simon J. Simonian Prize for Research Excellence in Surgery from Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Kletjian Foundation Research Endowment Award. In the near future, Dr. Riviello intends to continue facilitating professional development, research, and clinical education opportunities for surgeons in low-income countries and working with in-country partners, including Ministries of Health, professional societies, academic centers, faith-based organizations, and local and international stakeholders, to research and advocate for improved surgical access for vulnerable populations.
