In addition to his primary role, he has been a member of the Swedish National Board of the drug discovery and development platform with the Science for Life Laboratory since 2014 and as a member of the science advocate board of Evolva from 2007 to 2013. He has served on the editorial board of Future Science OA since 2014.
Prior to obtaining these roles, Dr. Sakariassen was the worldwide head of pharmacology and early safety evaluation with Serono International S.A. from 2001 to 2004, and director of pharmacology with the Pharmacia Corporation of Swedish Orphan Biovitrum AB from 1998 to 2001. From 1992 to 1998, he was director and head of discovery research with Nycomed Imaging AS, and he was group leader of the Biotechnology Center of Oslo from 1990 to 1992. Earlier in his career, he worked as a research scientist with F. Hoffmann-La Roche, Ltd., from 1987 to 1990. In addition to his work in the field, Dr. Sakariassen worked in education as a professor of physiology at the University of Oslo from 1993 to 1998.
Dr. Sakariassen began his career as a student at the University of Tromsø, obtaining a Master of Science in cell biology in 1979. He went on to study at the University Medical Center Utrecht, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1984. Dr. Sakariassen completed postdoctoral work with F. Hoffman-La Roche from 1984 to 1985, and with the University of Washington from 1985 to 1987.
Dr. Sakariassen developed an interest in physiology while pursuing his degrees, encouraged by his mentors who were world leaders in the area and helped lead him in the right direction. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his achievements, having received an 5'eme Prix Amalthee. He has been the recipient of an Odd Fellow Prize, an Award for Professional Dedication and Service and three Congress Awards from the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, and the Theodor Naegeli Preis Award. He was an honoree at the Owren Lecture, and he is a fellow and honoree of the American Health Association. Dr. Sakariassen was honored for excellence in medical biology and science research by Marquis Who's Who in 2017. In addition, he has been listed in several editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
