An esteemed educator of French and French literature at Tulane University, Dr. Brosman has accrued nearly 60 years of professional experience in the fields of writing and higher education. A professor emerita since 1997, Dr. Brosman joined the Tulane faculty in 1968. She formerly held the Gore Chair of French at Tulane University from 1992 to 1997, and was Andrew Mellon Professor of Humanities for one term in 1990. Prior to these appointments, Dr. Brosman served as a visiting associate professor at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, in 1970, an associate professor of French at Mary Baldwin College from 1966 to 1968, and an assistant professor of French at the University of Florida, Gainesville, from 1963 to 1966 and Sweet Briar College in 1962. Dr. Brosman began her career in academia as an instructor in French at Rice University from 1960 to 1962. She also served as a visiting professor at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom in 1996, where she was later named an honorary research professor.
In preparation for her successful career, Dr. Brosman studied at Rice University, first obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Romance languages in 1955, a Master of Arts in French in 1957, and a Doctorate in French in 1960. Alongside earning her degrees, Dr. Brosman studied as a Fulbright Scholar in France from 1957 to 1958.
In addition to her professional endeavors, Dr. Brosman is a highly acclaimed author and poet, publishing 11 collections of her poetry such as On the Old Plaza in 2014, On the North Slope in 2012, Under the Pergola in 2011, Breakwater in 2009, and Watering in 1972. Her poetry has been printed in magazines and newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times. In addition, Dr. Brosman has published scores of essays and scholarly articles. Her numerous books include scholarly studies such as Simone de Beauvoir Revisited in 1991 and Malraux, Sartre, and Aragon as Political Novelists in 1964. Additionally, she has published three collections of informal, personal essays, including Finding Higher Ground.
Dr. Brosman's work has been highly praised by critics. D.E. Richardson claimed that Dr. Brosman's writing is akin to that of Emily Dickinson, noting that she "convinces us in the way of the old meditative landscape poetry that nature is full of human meanings which we must notice lest we fail as human souls." In addition, her contributions to the writing community have prompted her to be honored with several accolades throughout her career, including the Tulane Liberal Arts and Science Research Prize in 1989, as well as the Hugh Scott Cameron prize for service to the university community from Rice University in 1995. She was also named a Distinguished Alumna of Rice University in 2000. Furthermore, she was twice short-listed for the position of poet laureate of Louisiana in both 2003 and 2007. Born in Denver, CO in 1934, Dr. Brosman is the daughter of Paul Victor and Della Hill. She has one daughter and two grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys writing, playing piano, studying architecture, and traveling.
