With nearly 70 years of professional experience, Dr. Mostert has served as the managing member of MedMo, LLC, since 2016, and as a self employed mathematician and consultant with the Mostert Group, Mostert Seales Research Company, LLC, and EquiMost since 1997. Recognized as a professor emeritus of the University of Kansas since 1991, he held the position of professor with the university from 1970 to 1991, also serving as chair of the Department of Mathematics from 1970 to 1973. Prior to obtaining these positions, he held a number of positions with Tulane University, beginning as a research instructor in 1953, moving up to assistant professor in 1954, associate professor in 1958, and full professor of mathematics in 1962. He also served as chair of the mathematics department from 1968 to 1970.
In addition to those roles, Dr. Mostert has held numerous positions with a variety of other organizations and institutions. Serving as a co-principal investigator and scientific director with i2i Technologies from 2009 to 2010, he was previously president of the EQUIX Research Corporation from 1985 to 2003 and EQUIX Biomechanics from 1989 to 1997, during which time his mathematical models of the biomechanics of racehorses produced the breeding of two Kentucky Derby winners and a number of champions, and his stride mechanics models selected many champions and Grade-I or Group-I winners in America, Britain, Europe and South Africa.
He has also served as a visiting professor with the University of Kentucky, as guest professor with the University of Tübingen in Germany, and on several occasions he was a summer Visitor to the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at Princeton. On receiving a National Science Foundation Senior Post-Doctoral fellowship and an invitation to become a Member of the IAS, he spent 1967-68 in residence there. He has delivered invited lectures at many mathematical and equine-related conferences throughout the world, the most recent as one of two keynote speakers (the other was Štefan Luby, former President of the All European Academies of Science) at the celebration of the 100th anniversary and dedication of a sculpture honoring the noted Slovakian mathematician, Štefan Schwarz, in Bratislava in September of 2014. He served on the Council of the American Mathematical Society and represented the mathematical community for it and the National Science Foundation on a number of occasions. In particular, after Congress established the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) he was the lone mathematician on the panel of scientists that visited the state of Arkansas, first state to apply for such a grant, to decide the adequacy of the Arkansas plans as well as the economic and political support needed to carry out those plans. Later, he served on the Kentucky EPSCoR Committee tasked with guiding that state's award as one of two representative of the business community.
Initially intending to pursue a career in law, while attending Rhodes College, Dr. Mostert's natural talent for mathematics led to a request by Dr. Marian McQueen, the professor teaching the course in differential equations in which Dr. Mostert was enrolled as a student, to teach the course for six days while Dr. McQueen attended a mathematical conference. Finding that he enjoyed the field and perceiving the satisfying life led by Dr. McQueen, he completed the requirements for graduation, except for two semesters of credit in his major, at the end of his junior year and enrolled in the graduate school at the University of Chicago, where he received a Masters degree in 1951, and at Rhodes through transfer of credits from the University of Chicago and examination. Purdue University awarded him a teaching assistantship and the opportunity to earn a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics in 1953, breaking a record for time in residence waived, his having solved the Steenrod Conjecture shortly after arriving at Purdue, which work became the main portion of his doctoral dissertation.
Throughout his career, Dr. Mostert has received numerous honors and accolades for his achievements, and had been nominated for the E. Harris Harbison National Award for Gifted Teachers. At Tulane University he was awarded multiple research grants through the Department's Office of Naval Research and Ford Departmental grants.
However, Dr. Mostert considers the highlight of his career to have been his role in the formation of the Semigroup Forum, a mathematics research journal that is now nearing its 50th year in publication and for which he served as an original Managing Editor and as its Executive Editor for eleven of its first 14 years of operation. That journal may have been the first scientific journal since WWII to contain scientists from both the United States and the Soviet Union on its board of editors.
Dr. Mostert was first listed in a Marquis Who's Who publication in the 1965 Who's Who in Mathematics 1700 B.C. to 1965 A.D., the only such publication ever published.
