With decades of experience in academia, Dr. Offen continues her active career as a historian and independent scholar. Dr. Offen began her teaching career as a lecturer in history at Santa Clara University in 1973 and at the University of San Francisco from 1975 to 1976. Since 1977 she has been affiliated with Stanford's Clayman Institute for Gender Research (initially known as the Institute for Research on Women). Her past academic employment includes lectureships at Stanford University in 1978, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1989, 1992, and 2002. During these years she also served as a visiting lecturer in history at the Central European University (Budapest) in 1999 and at the Universität Konstanz in 2000. She has lectured widely around the world.
Dr. Offen's many publications include Debating the Woman Question in the French Third Republic, 1870-1920 in 2018, The Woman Question in France, 1400-1870 in 2017, and European Feminisms, 1700-1950: A Political History in 2000. She has edited Globalizing Feminisms, 1789-1945, in 2010, co-edited Writing Women's History: International Perspectives in 1991, and co-authored Women, the Family, and Freedom, 1750-1950: The Debate in Documents in 1983. The co-editor of "Women's History at the Cutting Edge" for Women's History Review in 2018, she has served on the editorial advisory boards for French Historical Studies, Arenal, L'Homme, Journal of Women's History, History of European Ideas/European Legacy and Historical Reflections. Dr. Offen has also contributed dozens of pathbreaking articles to leading journals in the field, including "Defining Feminism: A Comparative Historical Approach," in Signs: Journal of Women in Culture & Society (1988).
Dr. Offen (then Karen Stedtfeld) earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Idaho in 1961, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board and voted an Outstanding Senior. She then studied on a Fulbright fellowship at the University of Nancy in France, and completed a Master of Arts in History at Stanford University in 1963. She obtained her Ph.D. in Modern European History at Stanford University in 1971. She has since held research fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In 1994 she received the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Idaho and in 2004, the university awarded Dr. Offen an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. In 2012, she received the Alumnae Achievement Award from Kappa Kappa Gamma national fraternity. Dr. Offen was also selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of American Women.
Her professional activities have included service as executive board member for the International Committee of Historical Sciences from 2010 to 2015, president of the Western Association of Women Historians from 1991 to 1993, and summer seminar director for the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1984, 1986, 1989, 1992, and 2002. Additionally, Dr. Offen was a founding member of the International Federation for Research in Women's History in 1987, and served as its first secretary-treasurer. She has also been active in various professional organizations related to her areas of expertise. From 1983 to 1986, she served on the executive committee for the Society for French Historical Studies and on the Committee of Women Historians of the American Historical Association. She then chaired the American Historical Association's Committee on International Historical Activities from 1986 to 1990.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field of history, in the 1970s and 80s, Dr. Offen helped found the Woodside Parents' Co-op Nursery School and subsequently chaired the Early Childhood Education Committee for her children's elementary school; she was also active in parent organizations at their high schools. From 1999 to 2011, she served on the board of directors for the International Museum of Women (now part of the Global Fund for Women) during which time she chaired the Concept Development and Content Development Committee. Dr. Offen is also a longtime member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, the American Association of University Women, and the Authors Guild. She has been married for 53 years to Dr. George R. Offen and they have two daughters, Catherine and Stephanie, and four grandchildren.
