Hired in 1960 by Pfizer, one of the leading American pharmaceutical companies in the world, Mr. Ellig moved in and out of roles during his tenure, where he remained for 36 years until retiring in 1996. Serving as a manager of compensation and personnel research, corporate director and vice president of compensation and benefits, the first corporate officer in the U.S. with this title, vice president of employee relations and personnel, and finally as the vice president of employee resources reporting to the Company's Chairman and CEO, a position he held for over 12 years. During this period he was also Secretary to the Board of Directors Executive Compensation Committee. Mr. Ellig was well-known for his tireless efforts and outstanding commitment to the organization.
In addition to being promoted to serve as the worldwide head of human resources at Pfizer, Mr. Ellig dedicated a lot of his time to serving on their savings investment, retirement plans assets, retirement plan, employee compensation and management development standing committees between 1985 and 1996. Outside the company, he spent five years with the Corporate Advisory Council in corporate education, and after retirement, spent another two years with the Career Center on their advisory panel. Locally, Mr. Ellig was active on numerous boards, most recently including the dean's advisory board for the School of Business at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, for the Global Remuneration Organization and the Kentucky Educational TV.
Mr. Ellig is the author of the book "American History Impact on Employee Pay and Benefits" in 2015 and 2018, "The Evolution of Employee Pay in The United States" in 2005, and "The Complete Guide to Executive Compensation" in 2002, 2007 and 2014, as well as several other books. He also served as a contributing author for numerous books, served on the advisory board for the Journal of Compensation and Benefits for 12 years until 1996, authored and co-authored more than 100 articles in various peer reviewed journals in his area of expertise, and participated in more than 400 presentations before many audiences, including on television and radio.
Active with a number of professional organizations, Mr. Ellig was a faculty staff member, and on the board of directors with the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) for several years including Board Chairman in 1996, an elected fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources in 1983, a year after it was formed, the Employer Benefits Research Institute, and the National Academy of Human Resources, among others, and member and lifetime member of several additional societies. In honor of his dedication, Mr. Ellig received several great accolades, including a Distinguished Business Alumnus Award from the University of Wisconsin's School of Business in 2007 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the SHRM in 1999 and the American Compensation Association (now WorldatWork). In 2004, he funded the Bruce R. Ellig Distinguished Chair in Pay and Organizational Effectiveness in the Business School at the University of Wisconsin.
Born in Manitowoc, WI, Mr. Ellig completed both a Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration at the University of Wisconsin in 1959 and 1960, respectively. He and his wife Janice have since traveled to 146 countries and enjoy reading hundreds of books each year and visiting their second home in Florida. A father of one child, Mr. Ellig has been included in dozens of editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
