Ms Burlingame Smith earned degrees from: A B.A. in music from Reed College, Portland, Oregon; A M.S. in personnel and guidance from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana; and a M.A. in English from California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Professor Emeritus of English at the Los Angeles Community College, Harbor College since 2011, Ms. Burlingame Smith spent 20 years on campus working in various capacities: English instructor, Sexual Harassment Officer, Staff Development Officer and President of the Academic Senate. She taught as a full English Professor for 12 years.
Ms. Burlingame Smith spent her former years in education as: a teacher consultant with the Los Angeles Unified School District, as a grant coordinator for the gifted with South Shores/CSUDH Magnet School, a private music teacher; soloist and children's choir director at the First Presbyterian Church in San Pedro; and as a general music teacher st Chinook Junior High School in Bellevue, Washington. Prior to her marriage to Gregory Lloyd Smith, Ms. Burlingame Smith was a buyer for Macy*s San Francisco.
Serving as the President of the Point Fermin Residents Association since 1997, Ms. Burlingame Smith has also served as a member or chair on many San Pedro organization boards throughout her career: Toberman Settlement House; Harbor Interfaith Shelters; the YWCA; school advisory committees such as the Sex Equality Commission for Los Angeles Unified School District; San Pedro American Association of University Women (also served at the state level as chair of the Initiative for Equality in Education; the Coastal Neighborhood Council; and the Los Angeles Port Community Advisory Committee (PCAC) as Chair of the San Pedro Coordinated Plan Subcommittee and then as Co-Chair of PCAC. Currently, she is also a member of the White Point Nature Preserve Steering Committee, the Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council's Task Force on Sunken City, and a member of San Pedro United Homeowners Association.
She has also received many awards for her volunteer work from: the Los Angeles Unified School District; the San Pedro and Lomita Chambers of Commerce; and was a Nominee for the "Woman of the Year" from the 54th Assembly District of the State of California. Additionally, she was named the Susan E. Barrett poet of the year by CSUDH in 1986.
