An associate professor in the department of physiology at Dongguk University College of Medicine since September 2010, Dr. Nam has also been the vice director of the Channelopathy Research Center in the College of Medicine since July 2014. First hired by the university in 2010, he served as an assistant professor with the department for six years before earning the title of associate professor. Dr. Nam also formerly spent two years as a research assistant professor in the department of pharmacology at Yonsei University College of Medicine, and two-and-a-half years as a postdoctoral fellow of physiology in the department of physiology at Seoul National University School of Medicine.
Highly educated, Dr. Nam earned a Bachelor of Science in Genetic Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University in 2001, followed by a Master of Science in Physiology in 2003 and a PhD in Physiology in 2006. Throughout his career, he has contributed more than 50 scientific papers to various publications such as the Journal of Dermatological Science, Gastroenterology and Journal of Physiology. Along with other scholars, Dr. Nam has covered such topics. For basic research, Dr. Nam is conducting a study on the investigation of control mechanism of TRP and calcium activated Cl- channel expressed in epithelial cells. For applied research, Dr. Nam is performing a study to find natural extracts and its chemical constituents that can treat allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and asthma, targeting ion channels like TRP and ORAI1.
He has been an active member of the Korean Physiological Society since 2003 and the American Physiological Society since 2007. In 2009, the Korean Physiological Society recognized him with a Rising Physiologist Award for his work.
Dr. Nam served in the Korean Military from September 2005 to August 2008 as a military service exempted technical research personnel. Happily married, he is the proud father of two small children.
