Dr. Rossiter, a native of Salt Lake City, Utah served two years, 1951-1953, in the United States Air Force (Radar Electronics) followed by five years in the Air Force Reserve attaining the rank of First Lieutenant.
He received his B.A degree in Chemistry at the University of Utah, 1954, and a Ph.D. Degree in Chemistry with a minor in Physics at the University of Utah in 1957. Dr. Rossiter joined the Color Photography Division of the Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories as a Research Chemist, 1967, later becoming Head, Color Physical Laboratory in 1963; Associate Director, Chemistry Division, 1968; Director, Chemistry Division, 1970-1984; and, Director, Science and Technology Development, 1984-1986. In the latter capacity he formulated a joint-venture proposal between the Eastman Kodak Company and ICN Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Costa Mesa, CA, to develop broad-spectrum antiviral drugs. Dr. Rossiter retired from the Eastman Kodak Company to become Vice President of ICN Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and President of Viratek, Inc., the ICN subsidiary for drug development, 1986-1990. The broad-spectrum drug "Ribavirin" was eventually approved by the F.D.A. for "Respiratory Syncytial Virus" and the treatment of "Hepatitis C."
In addition to executive responsibilities at the Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories and ICN Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Rossiter served in many leadership positions in a wide variety of national and international scientific endeavors including Senior Editor of the 27 volume treatise, Physical Methods of Chemistry, John Wiley and Sons, New York, NY; Chairman, United States National Committee of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC); Chairman, and principal author and architect of IUPAC's "Chemical Research Applied to World Needs" (CHEMRAWN) program. CHEMRAWN brings together international gatherings of preeminent scientific leaders and decision makers from industry, academia, governments and economic development organizations from around the world. Dr. Rossiter was Chairman of CHEMRAWN II, a ground-breaking conference on "Chemistry and World Food Supplies—the New Frontiers" held Manila, Philippines, 6-10, December 1982, the first major, international scientific meeting to be held in a Third World country; it set the pattern for the over 16 CHEMRAWN conferences to follow.
Dr. Rossiter served as a member and Chairman of the Research Advisory Committee of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID); Member, Editorial Advisory Boards of Science Magazine and Chemistry and Engineering News; Chairman, American Chemical Society Joint Board-Council Committee on International Activities,1984-86; Chairman, American Chemical Society International Activities Committee; Member, Research Advisory Committee, Cornell University, "International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development"; Consultant, President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology; President, Board of Trustees, Eastman Dental Center.
Dr. Rossiter's most recent publication is "The Art and Artistry of Dominic Man-Kit Lam: Chromoskedasic Painting" with Vanessa Lok-wa Li, 2017.
Concurrent with his professional activities, Dr. Rossiter served as an Officer in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Cumorah District President, 1959-1962, first Cumorah Stake President, 1962-1973, Church Historic Areas of Upstate NY; Regional Representative of the Twelve, North East United States and Eastern Canada, 1973-1984; San Diego Temple Presidency (First Counselor), 1988-2002; L.D.S. Director, Public Relations, Orange County, CA; Sealer, Newport Beach California Temple, 2005-present.
Dr. Rossiter is a "Fellow" of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1981; "Fellow" and "Members and Fellow Lecture Awardee", American Institute of Chemistry, 1988;" Merit of Honor Award", University of Utah, 2012; Distinguished Alumnus Award, University of Utah, 2017; Honorary Alumni Award, Brigham Young University; "Will Judy Lecture Award", Juniata College.
Dr. Rossiter has eight children: Bryant Edwin (deceased), Mark William, Diane, Steven Kent, Linda, Karen, Matthew James and Gregory Thomas, 20 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
