Responsible for all aspects of the organization's administrative operations, including finance, human resources, information technology, strategic planning and procurement since 2015, Ms. Brooks Henriquez works out of Washington, DC. Notably, she is also the owner and principal of SCBH Associates, LLC, since 2014.
A former assistant secretary of public and Indian housing of five years, Ms. Brooks Henriquez helped oversee regulatory and statutory compliance of more than 3,200 public housing authorities and tribal housing entities, administering more than $27 billion in public housing, Native American, Native Hawaiian and Native Alaskan and rental assistance programs. She also spent 13 years as chief executive officer of the Boston Housing Authority, where she was responsible for an 850-person workforce, a $280 million budget, and $1 billion in redevelopment activities. While serving as CEO in Boston, she was able to collaborate with Mayor Menino and make great headway regarding housing and health, which was a huge accomplishment in her career.
Earning her Bachelor of Arts in psychology at Boston University in 1972, Ms. Brooks Henriquez initially planned on going into medicine. However, she began working part-time as a relocation consultant, which earned her the opportunity to move into property management, where she fell in love with affordable and subsidized housing. From there, Ms. Brooks Henriquez earned numerous other roles with the Boston Housing Authority, the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Currently serving on the board of governors for the National Housing Conference since 2016, Ms. Brooks Henriquez is the former director and president of the Council of Large Public Housing Authorities. She also served on the board of directors for the YWCA Boston, and its Chair for 2 years, and is a former trustee of the New England Baptist Hospital. The recipient of numerous awards throughout her career, one of which includes being named Executive Director of the Year by the National Organization of African Americans in Housing. The Boston YWCA's Racial Justice Award is named in her honor in recognition of her work to desegregate Boston's public housing.
