A celebrated figure in the fields of health care and higher education, Dr. Holleman has accrued more than 55 years of professional experience in his areas of expertise. An associate clinical professor at the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College of Medicine since 2016, he has also been the director of the Division of General Internal Medicine in the Santa Fe Center since 1985, an associate professor of internal medicine at the Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College of Medicine since 1982, and a medical staff member at Scott & White Clinic and Hospital and Santa Fe Hospital since 1962.
In addition to his primary roles, Dr. Holleman has served as a medical director for the Consolidated Associations of Railroad Employees since 1997. Furthermore, he was part of the adjunct faculty and clinician of the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine from 1982 to 1986. Passionate about his community, he has also been on the board of directors for the Santa Fe Memorial Foundation and as Honorary Chairman of Physicians Advisory Board of the Texas Republican Congressional Committee.
In preparation for his illustrious career, Dr. Holleman sought out formal education, first obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and biology from Howard Payne College in 1953, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from Baylor University in 1958. Subsequently, he completed an internship at Scott & White Clinic and Hospital from 1958 to 1959, as well as a residency in internal medicine at the same institution from 1959 to 1962.
Dr. Holleman maintains affiliation with several professional organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Internal Medicine, the American College of Environmental and Occupational Medicine, the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Diabetic Educators, and the Texas Medical Association. Additionally, he is an honorary lifetime member of the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, a lifetime member of the Southern Medical Association, a diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management, and a lifetime member of Safari Club International. Dr. Holleman is also associated with Alpha Chi and Phi Chi.
A respected voice in the medical community, Dr. Holleman has served as an author of articles on health and preventative medicine. In addition, he has contributed his skills as an artist and photographer, serving as an illustrator of limited edition lithographs for the Baylor University Lettermans Association in 1994, as well as an illustrator for the Southern Baptist Student Union Projects from 1954 to 1958. He has contributed photographs to such books as "Colorado's Biggest Bucks and Bulls," "Boone and Crocket Books," "Awesome Antlers," and "Records of North American Mule Deer."
In recognition of his exceptional achievements, Dr. Holleman has been honored with several accolades throughout his career. Most recently, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus by Howard Payne University in 2016. In addition, he was honored with the Board of Trustees Service Award by Scott and White Health Care in 2012, as well as a 50 Year Staff Service Award from Scott & White Clinic in 2012. Furthermore, he was the recipient of the Pres Gainey Focus Award from Scott & White in 2007 and an Honorary Award from the Santa Fe Memorial Foundation in 2004. In 1999, the Vernon D. Holleman-Lewis M. Rampy Centennial Chair in Gerontology was established and funded by the Santa Fe Memorial Foundation. It is devoted to research and teaching at Scott and White and the Texas A&M Science Center College of Medicine. Dr. Holleman also received the Centennial Award from the Santa Fe Memorial Foundation in 1991.
Interested in medicine from a young age, Dr. Holleman had aspirations of being a doctor, partly influenced by Dr. David Livingstone, whom he considered his hero. Married to Shirley Roberts since 1961, he has three children: Richard, Joel, and Douglas. In his spare time, he enjoys medical history, art, nature and wildlife conservation, and photography. Dr. Holleman has been listed in several editions of Who's Who publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
