Dr. Madgett's career as a poet began with the publication of her small book, Songs to a Phantom Nightingale, in 1941. Poet Laureate of Detroit since 2001, she also penned her autobiography, Pilgrim Journey (2006), Connected Islands (2004), Octavia: Guthrie and Beyond (2002), Remembrances of Spring: Collected Early Poems (1993), Pink Ladies in the Afternoon, Second Edition (1990), Octavia and Other Poems (1988), Phantom Nightingale: Juvenilia (1981), the textbook, A Student's Guide to Creative Writing (1980), Exits and Entrances (1978), Pink Ladies in the Afternoon (1972), Star by Star, Second Edition (1970), Star by Star (1965) and One and the Many (1956).
Her book of poetry, Octavia and Other Poems was made required reading in all Detroit public high schools. A 25-minute documentary film based on Octavia and other poems was produced, and the 81-minute documentary film on her life and work, Star by Star: Naomi Long Madgett, Poet and Publisher, aired nationally and received praise all around. The Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library at the University of Michigan, a primary research collection for the humanities and social sciences, purchased her papers. A life-size bronze bust of Dr. Madgett is on permanent display at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the second largest facility of its kind in the country. In 2012, she was the winner of the prestigious Kresge Eminent Artist Award. In 1992, she edited the ground-breaking anthology Adam of Ifé: Black Women in Praise of Black Men. In 2011, she was the winner of the Outstanding Documentary Award from the Historical Society of Michigan.
In 1972, Dr. Madgett founded Lotus Press and continued as publisher and editor for the next 43 years when it merged with Broadside Press, becoming Broadside Lotus Press, which is required to continue the annual nationwide Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Award for an outstanding collection of poetry by an African American. For five years, while she was still publisher/editor of Lotus Press, she served as poetry editor of Michigan State University, selecting and editing one book a year in the Lotus Poetry Series.
Dr. Madgett was a Professor of English at Eastern Michigan University for 16 years, retiring as Professor of English Emerita in 1984. She previously taught English at Northwestern High School in Detroit for 12 years. While there, she led the crusade for fairer inclusion of literature by African Americans in textbooks and introduced the first course in all public high schools in Detroit in African American literature, as well as the first accredited course in creative writing.
Dr. Madgett was born in Norfolk, VA, and raised in East Orange, NJ and St. Louis, MO. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Virginia State College, a Master of Education from Wayne State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the International Institute for Advanced Studies. She has received five honorary doctorates from such universities as Loyola University-Chicago and Michigan State University, several Lifetime Achievement Awards, an American Book Award, a Michigan Artist Award, a Mayor's Award for Literary Excellence and, most recently, an Association of African American Life and History Award in 2013. Some of her poems have also been recorded at the Library of Congress and her poems have been reprinted in 97 anthologies worldwide, many translated into foreign languages, and some set to music and publicly performed.
Dr. Madgett has been highlighted in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
