Walter W. Huurman was born in 1936 and grew up in Rochester, NY. Early in life family and friends played a key role in his appreciation for the importance of both supportive role models and education.
Now Professor Emeritus at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha NE, Dr. Huurman officially retired in 2006 after practicing and teaching orthopaedic surgery and pediatrics on the campus for nearly 30 years. His career included 27 years as the director of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at the Children's Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha. Prior to these civilian assignments he spent four years as the director of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at the former U.S. Navy Medical Center in Oakland, CA.
He earned his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in 1958 at the University of Notre Dame and Doctor of Medicine in 1962 at Northwestern University. It was during his senior year at Northwestern that he was awarded a commission as a Lieutenant (j.g.) in the US Navy Medical Corps and began his Navy career. Dr. Huurman subsequently, in 1962/63, interned at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. prior to reporting to the Naval School of Aviation Medicine in Pensacola, Florida. He spent his first year of active duty studying Flight Medicine and learning to fly some of the Navy's basic aircraft. His subsequent four years were spent as a Flight Surgeon aboard the USS Hornet, an aircraft carrier off the coast of Viet Nam, and at the North Island and Miramar Naval Air Stations near San Diego, CA.
He was accepted for three years residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Naval Regional Medical Center and University of California Medical Center, San Francisco in 1968. This was followed by a year as a Pediatric Orthopaedic Fellow at the A.I. duPont Institute in Wilmington, Delaware. He then returned to the Naval Medical Center in Oakland to head up the Pediatric Section of its Orthopaedic residency program. In this second assignment in Oakland he was responsible for the training of Orthopaedic residents in the care of bone and joint problems in children. In 1977 he was offered, and accepted, a similar position the University of Nebraska Medical Center where an Orthopaedic Residency program had been initiated. His transition to civilian status was briefly interrupted by a recall to active duty during the Gulf war. In that 1990/91 conflict his role was as Chief of Orthopaedic surgery at the Naval Fleet Hospital, Bahrain. He completed his Naval service by serving in the Naval Reserve forces from 1980 to 1996.
A diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Huurman is an expert in Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatric Orthopaedics, aviation and the physical, mental and emotional problems associated with this wartime activity. Dr. Huurman is deeply grateful for the opportunity to complete 30 years of US Naval service, reaching the rank of Captain, 50 years of Orthopaedic surgical/medical practice and the opportunity to play a role in the education and development of over 125 Orthopaedic Surgeons.
He has been elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 2012 he was honored as a Pediatric Legend by the Children's Hospital and Medical Center of Omaha. One of the highlights of Dr. Huurman's career has been his ability to treat and help children who are enduring difficult medical problems. Featured in approximately 40 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World, Dr. Huurman, the proud father of two and grandfather of five, now resides in Northwest Florida with his wife of 50 years, the former Lindsay Anne McGuiness.
He has been very devoted to a number of professional Journals throughout his career, serving on the Editorial Board and as Associate editor of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, editorial Board of Pediatric Orthopaedics, and Pediatrics in Review, reviewer for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. In addition he has authored and co-authored several papers in other journals and has authored several textbook chapters.
Dr. Huurman, a member and former president of the National Alumni Board of Directors, Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, has dedicated time as the president and chairman of the Board of Directors for the Nebraska Chapter of the American Arthritis Foundation and is currently involved in fundraising for the Foundations of the University of Notre Dame and Northwestern University. He has served as Chairman of the Orthopaedic Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is a former Board Member of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America.
