Dr. Warner was born in Norfolk, Nebraska and attended elementary and high schools in Omaha, Nebraska. After graduation from Omaha Benson High School Dr. Warner was offered a Special Award athletic scholarship to the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado where he chose to major in geological engineering. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and president of SAE in his senior year. He was, also, president of the Mines letterman's club and recognized by Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges in 1956.
Following graduation from the Colorado School of Mines with the professional degree of geological engineer in 1956, Dr. Warner began his career as geological engineer for Gulf Oil Corporation in Wyoming and California Exploration Company in Guatemala and as a civil engineer for the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado between 1956 and 1959. He then accepted his first academic appointment at Colorado School Mines as a teaching assistant while obtaining the Master of Science degree in geology in 1961. He then was awarded a research assistant position at the University of California-Berkeley where he earned the Ph.D. degree in engineering science in 1964. After obtaining the Ph.D. he accepted a position as research geologist and engineer with the U.S. Public Health Service in Cincinnati, Ohio and then as chief of earth sciences with the Ohio Basin Region Federal Water Pollution Control Administration. Returning to higher education five years later, he was appointed as associate professor of geological engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1969 and became full professor in 1972 and department chairman in 1980. He then became dean of the School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1981 a position he held until his retirement in 1992 when he was awarded the title of Dean Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Geological Engineering.
He is an elected fellow of the Geological Society America and elected member of Tau Beta Pi and Theta Tau national honorary engineering societies. Dr. Warner is a registered professional engineer in Missouri and formerly registered geologist in Missouri and Mississippi. He was, also, former member of many other professional organizations, Dr. Warner received the Science Award in 1984 and a Distinguished Lecturer Award from the National Ground Water Association in 1986 for his work in the ground water field. He also received several more awards, including a Best Paper Award from the American Water Works Association and a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Colorado School of Mines in 2007. Throughout his career, Dr. Warner contributed more than 90 published research reports and articles in peer-reviewed journals and is the author of the book "Subsurface Wastewater Injection" published in 1981.
In addition to his career in academia, Dr. Warner spent decades performing research and consulting work for numerous federal, state, regional and local governments and agencies and many corporations. He also served on the board of directors of the Underground Injection Practices Council, was a member of the advisory committee to the Secretary of Interior for Mineral Resources Research, is lifetime Trustee of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in Leadville, Colorado and was appointed by the governor of Missouri to the Missouri Board of Geologist Registration.
Married to Patricia Ann Walker in 1957 and with two sons and four grand-daughters, he has been featured in more than 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education. His wife, Patricia, passed in February 2018, during the preparation of this narrative. She was his constant companion and supporter throughout 61 years of marriage.
