LAFAYETTE, CO, May 24, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present John Warren Hess, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Hess celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Hess is the president of the Geological Society of America Foundation in Colorado, an organization whose mission is to develop and provide funds to support the goals and programs of the Geological Society of America (GSA). These funds are distributed according to the needs of the Society and in a manner consistent with the desire of the donors. Serving in this capacity for the past three years and committed to serving as a trusted partner in achieving philanthropic objectives, Dr. Hess handles everything from the administrative aspects of running the foundation to meeting with potential and existing donors. Formerly serving as the executive director of the GSA for 13 years between 2001 and 2014, he was the longest to have ever served in that role.

Honored in 2015 by the GSA with a Distinguished Service Award, during Dr. Hess's tenure as executive director, he led the effort to right the ship financially, first opened a geoscience policy office in Washington, increased global engagement, enhanced GSA's education and outreach activities by adding innovative programs, increased membership, strengthened efforts to improve the diversity in the profession, launched two new scientific journals, embraced GSA's entry into social media, and helped GSA start down the path to change the publishing financial model. Furthermore, he was instrumental in making GSA and GSAF a fully functioning team alongside the foundation president at that time.

Earning a Bachelor of Science in geological sciences in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy in geology at Pennsylvania State University in 1974, Dr. Hess formerly spent 27 years with the Desert Research Institute (DRI) in Las Vegas, NV. Serving in a number of teaching roles, as well as director of the environmental isotope laboratory, deputy director, executive director, interim vice president of research and vice president of academy affairs, he concluded his career with the organization as a congressional fellow in 2001. A non-profit environmental research arm of the Nevada System of Higher Education, the DRI is a recognized world leader in investigating the effects of natural and human-induced environmental change and advancing technologies aimed at assessing a changing planet.

During his years in the field, Dr. Hess has lent his expertise as the chairman of the board of directors for the Karst Water Institute in Charlestown, WV, and on the board of directors of the National Care and Karst Research Institute. An elected fellow and former chair of the hydrogeology division of the GSA, he is also an elected fellow of the National Speleological Society and member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geophysical Union, the International Association Hydrogeologists and the Geochemical Society. Locally, Dr. Hess has been active as a leader of the Boy Scouts of America for more than 40 years in Boulder, CO, and is a former chairman of the U.S. National Committee of International Year of Planet Earth.

Throughout his career, Dr. Hess has contributed close to 100 articles in professional journals. He has also been the recipient of multiple awards, including a Distinguished Eagle Scout Award by the Boy Scouts of America in 2013 and an Alumni Achievement Award from the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Pennsylvania State University in 2004. Married to Letitia Jean Schrantz with two children, he has been cited in nearly every edition of Who's Who in America since 1992, as well as more than 20 editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
