Daniela Gioseffi Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An accomplished listee, Ms. Gioseffi celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. An author of poetry, fiction and non-fiction books, playwright, critic, artist and a recognized peace and social justice activist, Ms. Gioseffi began her career as a civil rights worker and journalist for WSLA-TV in Selma, AL, in 1961. She later taught and organized many environmental readings and seminars and was a charter poet in the Poets-in-the-Schools program in New York between 1972 and 1985. She is the founding editor of www.Eco-Poetry.org and www.ItalianAmericanWriters.com and is the author of 17 books of poetry and prose, more recently including "Waging Beauty: As the Polar Bear Dreams of Ice" in 2017.

Ms. Gioseffi's first book of poetry, "Eggs in the Lake," was a finalist for the Yale Series of Younger Poets and the Pitt Series of Younger Poets. Receiving several grants from the New York State Council of the Arts of the National Endowment for the Arts, some of her other collections of poetry include "Word Wounds & Water Flowers," "Going On," "Symbiosis" and "Blood Autumn." Ms. Gioseffi's prose has received awards as well, including an American Book Award for "Women on War: International Writing from Antiquity to the Present" in 1990, which was the first book of world literature to gather the global voices of women on the issues of war affecting their lives. "Daffodil Dollars" from her collection "In Bed with the Exotic Enemy" received a PEN Short Fiction Award. In 2003, she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Italian-American Educators, followed by a John Ciardi Award for Lifetime Achievement in Poetry for her sixth book "Blood Autumn" in 2007 and a New York State OSIA Literary Award in 2008, among several others.

During her career, Ms. Gioseffi has presented her writings for National Public Radio and the British Broadcasting Corporation, on major campuses and at leading book fairs, and has been heard on "The Poet and the Poem" Library of Congress radio show of the National Education Association. She has taught creative writing and world literature throughout the Metropolitan area, created the first Brooklyn Bridge Poetry Walk and had several plays produced off-Broadway. As a performer of multi-media poetry, Ms. Gioseffi has appeared at The Brooklyn Museum, Mecca Milwaukee, The Academy of American Poets, The Poetry Society of America, Poets House, NY, the Geraldine R. Dodge National Poetry Festival, and The United Nations, as well as on college and university campuses throughout the United States and Europe. More recently, in 2014, Ms. Gioseffi was featured in the film "Author and Activist, The Daniela Gioseffi Story," which premiered at the Maya Daren Theater in Manhattan, as well as at Hofstra University, St. John's University, and The Graduate Center of the City Center University of New York, among other locations. Furthermore, she has been an actress in classical theater and has toured with the National Players, was a professional jazz singer, and taught as a poet-in-residence at many institutions of learning. She has taught numerous workshops as well, which were titled "How to Avoid Rhetoric in Writing Ecological Poetry to Inspire Your Audience and Humanize Your Themes."

A longstanding member of www.350.org, Poet's House, the National Book Critics Circle, the Actors Equity Association, the Academy of American Poets and the PEN American Center, Ms. Gioseffi has served on the executive board and as chairman of the media watch committee for the Writers and Publishers Alliance for Nuclear Disarmament and as president of the Brooklyn Citizens for Sane Nuclear Policy.

Born in Orange, NJ, Ms. Gioseffi later moved to Little Falls, NJ, where she attended Passaic Valley High School and graduated as class valedictorian in 1959. Going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in English, speech, and theater at Montclair University, she then won a scholarship to Catholic University of America, where she completed a Master of Fine Arts in world drama and playwriting. Notably, she is the proud parent of one child, Thea D. Kearney, singer-songwriter.
