ROCHESTER, NY, May 25, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Dane R. Gordon with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Gordon celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Professor emeritus of philosophy at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) since 2000, Professor Gordon began his career in the College of Liberal Arts in 1962. He went on to spend 38 years at the college, teaching philosophy. During that time he also served as assistant dean, associate dean and acting dean, as a full- professor and, for many years, chairman of the philosophy department. Known for his tireless dedication, Professor Gordon taught as a visiting lecturer at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland, and at Saint Petersburg University in Russia. He also taught in Albania and Bosnia and, as a provost fellow and visiting distinguished lecturer in philosophy, at the American University in Bulgaria.
Born in England, Professor Gordon served in the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war he received a Master of Arts in history and theology from the University of Cambridge, a Bachelor of Divinity from the University of London, a Master of Arts in philosophy from the University of Rochester. Ordained as a Presbyterian Minister in 1958, Rev. Gordon spent several years as an associate minister with the Central Presbyterian Church in Rochester NY, prior to entering academia. First interested in religion during the war, he continues to serve as a Presbyterian minister and has been active in the Genesee Valley Presbytery for more than 50 years.
Since focusing his career on philosophy, Professor Gordon has coordinated a number of international conferences, traveled to more than 40 countries, and has written and/or edited numerous books on philosophy, the philosophy of religion, political thought and Old Testament studies. He also wrote two comprehensive editions of the history of RIT. During his teenage years, Gordon wrote poetry and acted on the London stage. He has continued his interest in poetry to the present, with five published books. One of them deals largely with the interaction of philosophical thinking and religious thought.
Professor Gordon is a longstanding member of the American Philosophical Association. In 1997 he received the Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching at RIT. In 2014 Professor Gordon and his wife Judith committed $300,000 in their estate plans to create The Dane R. Gordon Endowed Fund for Philosophy Student Success. The fund addresses three areas: aid to students conducting research along with scholarships leading to completion of their philosophy degree, support to philosophy students pursuing academic internships that further their professional and career goals, along with the Dane R. Gordon Lecture Series to host distinguished philosophy scholars who will address the RIT and Rochester communities. RIT has dedicated the Dane R. Gordon Seminar Room located in the Liberal Arts Building in recognition of this generous gift.
