With more than 40 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Hughes is currently retired, having most recently worked on the staff for obstetrics and gynecology with the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in Fort Hood, TX, for the U.S. Army Medical Department from 1997 to 2009. Retiring from active service in the U.S. Army in 1996, he was the hospital commander for Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center for the U.S. Army Medical Department from 1993 to 1995, the first command surgeon for the U.S. Special Operations Command at MacDill Air Force Base from 1993 to 1995, division surgeon for the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell from 1986 to 1988, and a staff physician for the Martin Army Community Hospital at Fort Benning from 1982 to 1986. Previously, Dr. Hughes held the positions of resident in obstetrics-gynecology at Tripler Army Medical Center from 1979 to 1982, intern in obstetrics-gynecology at Tripler Army Medical Center from 1978 to 1979, and airfield commander at Tipton Army Airfield at Fort Meade from 1971 to 1974.
Prior to these appointments, Dr. Hughes served three combat tours in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, having held the roles of combat infantryman, platoon leader, and co-commander from 1967 to 1968. He would return to active deployment in the Vietnam War as commander of the combat aviator-gun platoon, co-executive officer and battalion operations officer from 1970 to 1971. Dr. Hughes began his military service in 1966 as a commissioned second lieutenant, earning the rank of colonel until his retirement.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Hughes pursued an education at the United States Military Academy at West Point, receiving a Bachelor of Science in 1966. He continued his academic efforts at the Medical College of Virginia graduating with a Doctor of Medicine in 1978. He completed his studies in 1989, completing postgraduate coursework at the United States Army War College. Dr. Hughes would go on to become a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Hughes taught residents for over 17 years and was responsible for over 4,000 deliveries.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Hughes has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. Since 1994, he has been an assistant professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Texas A&M University. Likewise, he was a consultant for the Surgeon General of the United States Army from 1995 to 1996. In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Hughes remains affiliated as past District Deputy Grand Master of the Tenth Virginia Masonic District, past Master of Cabell Lodge 328, and a member of the American College of Physician Executives.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Hughes has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He has been presented with the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, the Defense Superior Service Medal and the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters for his military service. Additionally, he was further recognized with the Combat Infantry Badge, the Senior Army Aviation Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Master Flight Surgeon Badge and the Expert Field Medical Badge. Honored in the Military Order of Medical Merit, Dr. Hughes also received the Bronze Star Medal with V Device and three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with 37 Awards, a Ranger Tab, three Century Wings-82nd,101st, and Special Forces, British Airborne Wings, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, and Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster-one each from his cited infantry and aviation units.
An inductee in the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club, Dr. Hughes garnered a Local Community Award from his volunteer fire department. He was also honored as a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Hughes was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America.
