With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Levin has been an ad-hoc professor for the University of Louisville and a professor emeritus with Centre College since 2010. Prior to these appointments, he held multiple positions at Centre College, including as professor from 2001 to 2010, as associate professor from 1992 to 2001, and as assistant professor from 1986 to 1992. Previously, he worked as an assistant professor at the Minnesota State University at Mankato from 1983 to 1986. Dr. Levin began his career as an instructor with the Associated Colleges of the Midwest in Florence, Italy, from 1977 to 1981.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Levin pursued an education at Northwestern University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1970. He followed this accomplishment with a Master of Arts in the history of art in 1973 at the University of Michigan. Dr. Levin concluded his studies in 1983 at the University of Michigan, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in the history of art.
Beyond his work in the classroom and as a mentor to students, Dr. Levin has participated in numerous endeavors in his professional circles. An invited presenter at national and international conferences and in colleges and universities in North America and Europe, he was on the Governing Board for the Mankato Area Arts Council from 1984 to 1986. Dr. Levin is a member of the Heart of Danville Main Street Program and the Arts Commission for Danville-Boyle County, KY, served on the Facilities and Exhibits Committee for the Community Arts Center in Danville, KY from 2003 to 2005, and was secretary for the Architectural Review Board in Danville, KY from 2000 to 2005.
Dr. Levin has found much success with his written works as well, having authored "Images of Love and Death in Late Medieval and Renaissance Art" in 1976 and "The Allegory of Mercy at the Misericordia in Florence: Historiography, Context, Iconography, and the Documentation of Confraternal Charity in the Trecento" in 2004. He has also contributed chapters to several books, including "Art Museums of the World" and "The World of Saint Francis of Assisi: Select Proceedings from the First International Conference on Franciscan Studies, Siena, Italy, July 16-20, 2015." Furthermore, Dr. Levin has penned many articles for esteemed journals such as Speculum: A Journal of Medieval Studies, The Burlington Magazine, Studies in Iconography, Fifteenth-Century Studies, Arris: Journal of the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians, Confraternitas, and the Southeastern College Art Conference Review.
In addition, Dr. Levin remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. On the program committee for the Italian Art Society from 2004 to 2007, he has been involved with the College Art Association, the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, the Friends of the Boyle County Public Library, the Speed Art Museum, and the Cincinnati Art Museum. He is also associated with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Center of Medieval Art, the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and the Pi Kappa Alpha Foundation. Likewise, Dr. Levin has long been a member of the Society for Confraternity Studies, the South-Central Renaissance Conference, the Midwest Art History Society, the Association for Textual Scholarship in Art History, and the Medieval Association of the Midwest.
Dr. Levin has contributed to the Southeastern College Art Conference as chair of the History and Archives Committee since 1998, on the Board of Directors from 1997 to 2003, on the Art History Evaluation Standards Committee from 2003 to 2004, and on the Committee on Annual Meeting Policies and Procedures from 2006 to 2007. Additionally, he served the Southeastern College Art Conference on the Awards Committee from 2004 to 2005 and from 2010 to 2011, and for a term on its Editorial Board beginning in 2014. He has also been active with NU Loyal, the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, the Wildcat Fund, and the University Library Deering Society for the Northwestern University Alumni Association. Dr. Levin has maintained memberships with the Henry P. Tappan Society and the Harry B. Hutchins Society for the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan, with the University of Michigan Museum of Art, and with the University of Kentucky Art Museum.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Levin has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his career. He was recognized as a Study Fellow by ITT Inc. from 1976 to 1977 and as a Centre Scholar at Centre College from 2001 to 2003. He was honored as an H.W. and Adele Stodghill Research Professor by Centre College in 2006. The Southeastern College Art Conference presented Dr. Levin with the Award for Excellence in Scholarly Research and Publication in 2004, the Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2010, and the Award for Exemplary Achievement in 2010. In 2013 the latter organization established the annual William R. Levin Award for Research in the History of Art with an endowment funded in perpetuity.
