With more than 55 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Lewis has worked as the Donald G. Millar emeritus professor of alcohol and addiction studies at Brown University since 2012 and as the professor of medicine and community health at Brown University since 1982. Previously, he served Brown University as the Donald G. Millar professor of alcohol and addiction studies from 1987 to 2012, director of the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies from 1982 to 2000, chairman of the Department of Community Health from 1981 to 1986, and the director of the program on alcoholism and drug abuse from 1976 to 1982. Prior to these appointments, he held the position of the director of the division of alcohol and substance abuse at the Roger Williams Medical Center from 1976 to 1982, medical director of the Washingtonian Center for Addictions from 1972 to 1977, senior resident with Parkland Memorial Hospital from 1964 to 1966, and senior resident with the University Hospitals of Cleveland from 1963 to 1964. Dr. Lewis began his career at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center as the director of the emergency unit and the medical outpatient department from 1969 to 1971, chief medical resident from 1966 to 1967, junior resident from 1962 to 1963, and intern from 1961 to 1962.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Lewis pursued an education at Brown University, earning a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1957. He concluded his studies at Harvard University in 1961, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine. He has found much success with his written works as well, having served as author for "The Drug Experience: Data for Decision Making" in 1970, editor of "Providing Care for Children of Alcoholics" in 1986, editor of "Brown University Digest of Addiction Theory and Application" from 1986 to 2001, and the executive editor for Substance Abuse since 1984. Likewise, Dr. Lewis has also contributed numerous articles to esteemed professional journals.
Beyond his efforts within the field, Dr. Lewis has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. The chairman for the Committee on Publication Ethics, he has served on the national advisory council for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism from 1981 to 1985, as consultant to the director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism from 1985 to 1993, as a consultant with the World Health Organization from 1986 to 2000, on the cocaine global advisory committee with the World Health Organization from 1992 to 1995, and as chair of the Physician Consortium on Substance Abuse Education from 1989 to 1999. Additionally, Dr. Lewis was on the scientific advisory board for the Children of Alcoholics Foundation from 1985 to 1995, the Substance Abuse Advisory Committee for Carnegie Mellon University from 1989 to 1992 , the advisory panel to the United States Pharmacopeia from 1995 to 1999, and the National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse from 1994 to 2000.
The director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center at Brown University from 1995 to 2000, Dr. Lewis worked on the national advisory committee for the Fighting Back Program with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation from 1996 to 2002. He has been associated with the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence as deputy chair from 2002 to 2004, as chair from 2004 to 2008, and on the board of directors since 1995. He has also served the Physicians and Lawyers for National Drug Policy on board of directors since 2004, as project director for the Physician Leadership on National Drug Policy from 1997 to 2004 and as founder and chair from 1997 to 2004. On the board of directors for the Drug Policy Alliance since 2000, Dr. Lewis was the chairman for the Mayor's Council on Drug Abuse in Boston, MA, from 1972 to 1980 and the medical director for the Beacon Hill Free Clinic in Boston from 1968 to 1971.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Lewis remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained membership with the National Academy of Sciences, Healing Images, the Phi Beta Kappa Society and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society. He has participated on the board of directors for the Association for Education and Research in Substance Abuse since 1985, as well as their executive committee and as executive director from 1983 to 1988. Dr. Lewis has also been involved on the board of directors for the American Academy on Physicians and Patients from 1998 to 2001, as president of the Brown Medical Alumni Association from 1974 to 1976, and as a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine from 1995 to 2005, during which time he served as secretary from 2003 to 2005.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Lewis has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He has been honored by the Harvard Medical School with Harvard University as an Edward John Noble Fellow from 1957 to 1991, an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow from 1971 to 1972, with the Norman E. Zinberg Memorial Lecturer Award in 1996, and with a Distinguished Contributions in the Addictions Award in 2002. A fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Lewis has also been recognized as a fellow in internal medicine with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School from 1964 to 1966, a residency fellow with the Bellagio Center of the Rockefeller Foundation from 1996 to 1997, a fellow of the Open Society Institute from 1997 to 1998, and a Medical Foundation Fellow with the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center from 1967 to 1970.
A Scholar-in-Residence at the Institute of Medicine for the National Academy of Sciences from 1990 to 1991, Dr. Lewis has also been a grantee of the National Institute on Drug Abuse since 1986, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation since 1996, and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation from 1997 to 1999. He has been presented with the Excellence in Medical Education Award from the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse in 1986 and 1997, the Silver Key Award in 2008, the John P. McGovern Award from the American Society of Addiction Medicine in 2004, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the College for Behavioral Health Leadership. Dr. Lewis has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who Among Human Services Professionals, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
