Celebrating 50 years in practice, Mr. Hughes is the sole practitioner of his firm, John W. Hughes, PC, in Fort Worth, TX. He has mediated more than 6,000 diverse cases.
After graduating from law school, Mr. Hughes was employed by Hardwick & Pope, Kelly Jacobs, and Simon & Simon in Fort Worth, TX, in 1967, where he remained for 13 years. He then formed his own private practice, Hughes & Langston, which he operated for several years before becoming an oil and gas, real estate, and manufacturing businessman. Mr. Hughes then joined Simon, Anisman, Doby, Wilson & Shillern, spending five years with the firm until 1996. He subsequently began focusing his legal career on mediation, becoming a full-time mediator as part of Garrison & Hughes. Four years later, he founded his solo practice in mediation and arbitration.
Formerly serving as president of the Association of Attorney-Mediators and the Tarrant County Young Lawyers Association, Mr. Hughes is a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and the Tarrant County Bar Foundation. He is a member of the Tarrant County Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas.
Mr. Hughes holds a BBA in Accounting from Texas Christian University, a JD from Baylor University, and a certification in Dispute Resolution Services of Tarrant County. He is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Texas, the Fifth and 10th Circuits of the U.S. Court of Appeals, the Northern, Southern, and Eastern Districts of Texas, the U.S. District Court, the U.S. Tax Court, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He has since contributed several articles in professional and academic journals, including "Is It Just a Business Meeting by a Fancy Name?" and "Get Prepared for Something Important," which were both published in the Attorney at Law Magazine.
Recently receiving a 50-Year Award by the State Bar of Texas for his five decades of service in 2017, Mr. Hughes received a Tier I Rating by the U.S. News and Best Lawyers for 2017, was named to Texas' Top Rated Lawyers for 2017, and was named Top Attorney in Tarrant County by 360 West Magazine for 2017. He has also been named a Texas Super Lawyer, has been named one of the Top 100 in the State of Texas, and is an AV-Rated Attorney by Martindale-Hubbell.
