With 50 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Wegman has worked as the director for the Center of Computational Data Sciences at George Mason University since 1986. The first program director of the Ultra High Speed Computing Basic Research Program for the Innovative Science and Technology Office with the Strategic Defense Initiative, he served as the head of the Mathematical Science Division for the Office of Naval Research from 1978 to 1986, during which time he held the role of senior executive from 1983 to 1986. Prior to these appointments, Dr. Wegman was the visiting professor of mathematics at the University of Manchester from 1976 to 1977 and the professor of statistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1968 to 1978.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Wegman pursued an education at Saint Louis University, earning a Bachelor of Science in mathematics in 1965. He followed these accomplishments with a Master of Science in mathematical statistics at the University of Iowa in 1967. Dr. Wegman concluded his studies at the University of Iowa in 1968, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematical statistics.
Beyond his efforts within the field, Dr. Wegman has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He has found much success with his written works, having co-authored "Statistical Design of Weather Modification Experiments" in 1980, "Statistical Signal Processing" in 1984, "Statistical Image Processing and Graphics" in 1986, "Topics in Non-Gaussian Signal Processing" in 1988, and "Brain Structure, Learning and Memory" in 1988. Additionally, Dr. Wegman has been prolific as a contributing author of articles to more than 210 professional journals.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Wegman remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. An elected member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the International Statistical Institute, he maintained membership with the Research Society on Alcoholism, the American Statistical Association, and as a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Likewise, he was previously involved as the chairman of the Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics for the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Wegman also served as the former president of the International Association for Statistical Computing.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Wegman has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. A senior faculty fellow of the National Science Foundation in 1976, he was recognized as a fellow of the Washington Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the American Statistical Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Royal Statistical Society and the National Defense Education Act. A visiting fellow for the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in 2008, he was presented with a Decorated Meritorious Civilian Service Medal by the U.S. Navy in 1982, as well as a Founders Award from the American Statistical Association in 2002. Dr. Wegman was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
