With 50 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Catanese is currently retired, having most recently worked as president of the Florida Institute of Technology from 2002 to 2017. Prior to this appointment, he served as the president for Florida Atlantic University from 1989 to 2002, professor for Florida Atlantic University from 1990 to 2002, and dean of the College of Architecture at the University of Florida from 1984 to 1989. Previously, he was the professor of architecture and urban planning and provost at the Pratt Institute from 1982 to 1984, the dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 1975 to 1982, and both the James A. Ryder Professor of Transportation and Planning and the director of the Ryder Program in Transportation at the University of Miami from 1973 to 1975. Dr. Catanese began his career at the Georgia Institute of Technology, holding the positions of assistant professor of city planning from 1967 to 1978, associate professor from 1968 to 1973, and the chairman of the doctoral studies committee from 1970 to 1973.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Catanese pursued an education at Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. He continued his academic efforts with a Master in Urban Planning at New York University in 1965. He completed his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1968, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Catanese has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. The president of A. J. Catanese & Associates, Inc., since 1967, he was a Senior Fulbright professor at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Colombia from 1971 to 1972, a senior consultant for the State of Wisconsin from 1965 to 1967, the senior planner for the State of New Jersey from 1963 to 1967, and the commission president for the National Collegiate Athletic Association from 1991 to 1993. The 2006 campaign chair and past board chairman for the United Way of Brevard, Dr. Catanese has participated on the boards of the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts, the Henegar Center for the Arts, LEAD Brevard, and the Central Florida Partnership.

In terms of his civic work, Dr. Catanese was the chairman for DeKalb County Democrats from 1969 to 1971, a member of the Democratic Caucus from Georgia's Fifth Congressional District in 1971, aide-de-camp for the Governor's Office in the State of Georgia from 1971 to 1972, a member of the Urban Policy Task Force for Jimmy Carter's Presidential Campaign in 1976 and 1980, and on the board of directors for the Environmental Research & Education Foundation. On the board of directors Goals for Milwaukee 2000 from 1978 to 1982, he has participated on the Georgia Dunes Studies Commission from 1972 to 1973, as the president of the Park West Redevelopment Corporation from 1976 to 1978, as chairman of the Milwaukee City Planning Commission from 1978 to 1982, as the chairman of the Gainesville Planning Board from 1986 to 1989, and on the board of directors for the Architectural Research Centers Consortium since 1976. From 2007 to 2009, Dr. Catanese served as the president of the Sunshine State Conference.

Dr. Catanese has found much success with his written works as well, having authored such books as "Scientific Methods of Urban Analysis" in 1972, "New Perspectives on Urban Transportation Research" in 1972, "Systematic Planning-Theory and Applications" in 1970, "Planners and Local Politics: Impossible Dreams" in 1973 and "Urban Transportation in South Florida" in 1974. He has also penned "Personality in Politics and Planning" in 1978, "Introduction to Urban Planning" in 1979, "Introduction to Architecture" in 1979, "The Politics of Planning and Development" in 1984, and "Urban Planning" in 1988. Additionally, Dr. Catanese has notably contributed multiple articles to professional journals.

In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Catanese remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement on the board of governors and as vice president of the American Institute of Planners from 1971 to 1974, on the executive committee for the American Institute of Certified Planners from 1971 to 1974, president and chair of the Florida Association of Colleges and Universities and the Florida Campus Compact, and the chairman of the President's Council for the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida from 2010 to 2012. He has also been a member of the American Planning Association, the Transportation Research Board, the Regional Science Association International, the American Academy of Political and Social Science and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning, Inc.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Catanese has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He has been awarded scholarships of the State of New Jersey Act of 1927 from 1962 to 1963, the Werner Hegemann Foundation from 1963 to 1965, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation from 1965 to 1968, the Richard King Mellon Foundation from 1966 to 1967 and the Ford Foundation in 1967, and the National Endowment for the Arts in 1980. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners, Dr. Catanese was inducted into Florida Institute of Technology's Sports Hall of Fame in 2014, the Eckerd Brevard Walk of Fame in 2014, the Junior Achievement Hall of Fame and the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame.

Honored as Business Leader of the Year by Space Coast Business in 2015 and Most Outstanding University President in the Southeastern United States by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education in 2002, Dr. Catanese was presented with the Chief Executive Leadership Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, the Trailblazer Award from Rotary International, the Diversity Champion Award from the Urban League, the Outstanding College President's Award from the All-American Football Foundation and the Golden Eagle Award from the Boy Scouts of America. He further garnered the Community Leadership Award from the Brevard Bar Foundation in 2011, an Achievement Award from the Sons of Italy Foundation in 1998, and the Excalibur Award from the Sun-Sentinel in 1999. Dr. Catanese was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
