A professor emerita, Dr. Henry was a staple on campus at the University of Denver for 23 years. Retiring in 2000, she formerly taught at Metropolitan State College and the University of Pennsylvania. She also spent 14 years with the YWCA as a teenage program director in Lima, OH, branch executive in Cleveland and special services director in Denver.
Throughout her many years in education, Dr. Henry was also influential outside the classroom. She was active as a member of the Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups, was a member of the AARP, where she served on the national legislative council, and was a member of the Council of Social Work Education where she served on the House of Delegates. Locally, she was involved as a committee chair for the American Friends Service Committee in Philadelphia, was a member of the Planning Commission for Gilpin County, CO, was chairman of the Citizen Advisory Board of Health and Human Services and was board president of the Columbine Family Health Center.
Dr. Henry first obtained a Bachelor of Arts at Earlham College in Richmond, IN, in 1956. Several years later, she returned to college to complete a Master of Science in social administration at Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1964 and a Doctor of Social Work at the University of Denver in 1972. Her first academic appointment was at the School of Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania as an Assistant Professor beginning in 1972 and ending in 1976. She then began teaching at the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Denver as an Associate Professor. Honored with a Contribution to Professor Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001 and a Contribution to Professional Literature Award from the Association of Social Group Workers in 1986, Dr. Henry was a W.T. Grant Fellow by the YWCA in New York City and received a two year doctoral training grant from the Children's Bureau of the U.S. Government as well.
