With more than 60 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Hutchison has been the George Lynn Cross research professor emeritus with the University of Oklahoma since 2001. Prior to this appointment, he was the George Lynn Cross research professor of zoology for the University of Oklahoma from 1979 to 2001, professor and chairman of the department of zoology at the University of Oklahoma from 1970 to 1980, professor of biology in the department of biological sciences at the University of Rhode Island from 1968 to 1970, and on the faculty of University of Rhode Island, rising from assistant professor to full professor in the department of biological sciences between 1959 and 1970. Previously, he held the positions of director of the Institute of Environmental Biology at the University of Rhode Island from 1966 to 1970 and instructor at Duke University from 1957 to 1958. Dr. Hutchison is also prolific in his military service, commissioned in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and eventually serving as colonel of the medical service corps for the U.S. Army Reserve between 1954 and 1982.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Hutchison pursued an education at the University of North Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1952. He followed this accomplishment as a graduate from the Command and General Staff College for the U.S. Army. He returned to his academic efforts in 1956, receiving a Master of Arts from Duke University. Dr. Hutchison concluded his studies at Duke University in 1959, obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Hutchison has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. A research professor with the Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia, from 1965 to 1966, he was a principal investigator for the National Geographic Society, representing the University of Rhode Island on a herpetological expedition to Colombia from 1964 to 1965, as well as the University of Oklahoma on expeditions to Lake Titicaca in 1975 and Cameroon in 1981. He is also the founder and past president for the Oklahomans for Excellence in Science Education. Furthermore, Dr. Hutchison has found success with his written works, serving as editor on the "Animal Natural History" series since 1991 and providing much research and articles to esteemed scientific journals.

In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Hutchison remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained membership with the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the American Physiological Society, the Ecological Society of America and the Explorers Club. Likewise, he has been involved as the president of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists in 1988, on the executive committee for the Herpetologists League from 1968 to 1971, on the board of governors for the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles from 1986 to 1988, and as president of the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles from 1998 to 1999. Dr. Hutchison has also been a member of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society; the Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society; and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Hutchison has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. Recognized as a faculty fellow and southern fellowship fund fellow for Duke University from 1958 to 1959, he was a fellow for the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation from 1965 to 1966. He has also been presented with the Decorated Commendation Medal from the U.S. Army in 1954, the Meritorious Service Medal in 1982, the Constitutional Heritage Award from the Oklahoma Chapter of the Americans United for Separation of Church and State in 2000, the Friend of Darwin Award from the National Center for Science Education in 2008, the Distinguished Service Award from the Oklahoma Science Teachers Association in 2011, and the Award of Merit from the Oklahoma Academy of Science in 2012. Dr. Hutchison was selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
