With more than 40 years of industry experience to her credit, Dr. Barrett Litoff has worked as a professor of history at Bryant University since 1987, having previously served as an associate professor of history from 1981 to 1987 and assistant professor of history from 1975 to 1981. Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Barrett Litoff pursued an education at Emory University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in history, with high honors, in 1967. She followed this accomplishment with a Master of Arts at the same academic institution in 1968. Dr. Barrett Litoff concluded her studies at the University of Maine in 1975, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.
Beyond her efforts within the field, Dr. Barrett Litoff has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. She has served on the board of directors for Stages of Freedom since 2014, on the advisory board for the Story on the Public Square at Salve Regina University since 2013, as a Fulbright specialist with the Institute of International Education, Inc., since 2011, on the board of directors for the U.S.S. Massachusetts Memorial Committee, now known as Battleship Cove, since 2008, and on the board of directors for the Festival Ballet Providence since 2007.
The co-chair for the Comparative Home Fronts Conference at Florida State University in 2016, Dr. Barrett Litoff was an invited lecturer for the U.S.-China Institute from 2014 to 2015, the South County Museum in 2014, the Hero Symposium at Fordham University in 2013, the Norton Institute for Continuing Education at Wheaton College in 2013, and the Annual Convention of the National Farmers in 2013, among many other international academic, economic and historical organizations. Working as a historical consultant for the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial Association from 2004 to 2008, the U.S. Department of Education from 2003 to 2007, the Rhode Island Historical Society from 2002 to 2007, and the National Endowment for the Humanities from 2002 to 2003, she held multiple roles at the Rhode Island Historical Society, including on the board of trustees from 1999 to 2003, a council member for the Newell D. Goff Institute for Ingenuity and Enterprise from 1998 to 2004, council chair for the Newell D. Goff Institute for Ingenuity and Enterprise from 1999 to 2003, and on the board of directors from 2004 to 2013.
On the Willie Lee Rose Prize Committee for the Southern Association of Women's Historians in 2003, Dr. Barrett Litoff was on the advisory board for the World War II Veterans Committee in the American Veterans Center from 2001 to 2002, a Visiting U.S. Department of State American Studies Professor at European Humanities University from 1998 to 1999, on the program committee for the Southern Historical Association in 1993 and 1999, and on the membership committee for the Southern Historical Association from 1988 to 1991 and in 1999. She also held the title of chair of the Comparative Home Fronts Conference at Florida State University in 2016, chair of the Annual Meeting of the Oral History Association in 2005, session chair of the Annual Meeting of the Oral History Association in 2003, session chair of the Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association in 2002, session chairperson of the Women's Summit at Bryant University in 1997 and 1999, and the session chairperson of the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association in 1980. A historical consultant for "The Warrior Girls Project" since 2011, as well as the A&E Television Networks, the Public Broadcasting Service and the History Channel, Dr. Barrett Litoff was on the advisory board for the documentary film "A Woman's War Too," and has been featured as a guest on National Public Radio, C-SPAN and in the Providence Journal.
On the advisory board for World War II: The Global, Human, and Ethical Dimension since 2000, Dr. Barrett Litoff has found much success with her written work, having authored "Bryant College Goes to War" in 2013, "Dancing with Colonels: A Young Woman in World War II Turkey" in 2011, "An American Heroine in the French Resistance: The Diary and Memoir of Virginia d'Albert-Lake" in 2006 and 2008, and "Dear Poppa: The World War II Berman Family Letters" in 1997. The co-author of "Miss You: The World War II Letters of Barbara Wooddall Taylor and Charles E. Taylor" in 1990 and 2013, she was the co-editor for "Fighting Fascism in Europe: The World War II Letters of an American Veteran of the Spanish Civil War" in 2003, "What Kind of World Do We Want?: American Women Plan for Peace" in 2000, and "American Women In A World At War: Contemporary Accounts From World War II" in 1997. Having contributed chapters to numerous books such as the "Handbook of American Women's History" and "Encyclopedia of the United States in the Nineteenth Century," Dr. Barrett Litoff has contributed articles to many esteemed journals, including the Journal of Tourism and Cultural Change, Journal of Teaching in International Business, AABSS Perspectives Electronic Journal and Finest Hour.
In addition to her primary trade, Dr. Barrett Litoff remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She has maintained involvement with the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians and the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society. Likewise, she is a member of the Southern Historical Association, the Southern Association of Women Historians and Stages of Freedom. Dr. Barrett Litoff has also been associated with Phi Alpha Theta, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Barrett Litoff has accrued several accolades and honors throughout her impressive career. A U.S.-China Institute grantee in 2010, she has been presented with several awards from Bryant University, such as a Faculty Federation Distinguished Faculty Member Award in 1988, a Herstory Award in 1996, a Research and Publication Award in 1997 and 2005, and a Merit Award in 1991, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2014, and 2016. Nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Research by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2003, she received the Honorary Chairs' Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Humanities from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities in 2007, the Best in French Culture Award from the Cultural Services Office at the Embassy of France in Washington, DC, in 2006, an Editorial Endorsement from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1991, the James Madison Prize from the Society for History in the Federal Government in 1994, and a Distinguished Faculty Member Award from the Bryant University Alumni Association in 1989. Dr. Barrett Litoff was additionally recognized as a Sinology Fellow with the Office of Chinese Language Council International at the Confucius Institute Headquarters in 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2015, the U.S. Department of Education Invited Scholar with the University of Tennessee and East Tennessee State Historical Society in 2005, a Higher Education Support Program grantee with the Open Society Foundations in 1999, a Travel and Research grantee with the Eurasia Foundation in 1997, and a Career Scholar with the Ford Foundation.
Dr. Barrett Litoff has also earned many federal grants in conjunction with renowned academic institutions, including the U.S. Department of State with Bryant University and Suffolk University between 1997 and 2000, the U.S. Department of Energy with the United States Industry Coalition from 1997 to 1998, the U.S. Department of Defense with the Center for International Business and Economic Development in 1996, and the U.S. Department of Education with Bryant University in 1995. She also obtained a Summer Research Stipend 14 times from Bryant University between 1989 and 2013. She has been honored among the Directory of American Scholars, World Who's Who of Women, the Directory of International Biography, Who's Who of Rhode Island, International Who's Who in Education, Men and Women of Distinction, and Outstanding Young Women of America.
