An expert in 19th century American literature and American novelists Herman Melville and Thomas Wolfe, Dr. Lanzinger is a professor emeritus at the University of Notre Dame, where he taught for 30 years between 1967 and 1997. Hired as an associate professor of modern languages, within 10 years he had become a full professor, where he remained until retirement. During his years on campus, he served as the acting chairman of the department of modern and classical languages, chaired the German and Russian department, and was the resident director of the foreign studies program at the University of Innsbruck for many years, which he enjoyed the most.
Receiving a Fulbright scholarship in 1951 to come to the United States and pursue his research and teaching career, Dr. Lanzinger received his undergraduate degree at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME, in 1951. He then returned to his native country of Austria to complete a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Innsbruck in 1952, where he spent another 10 years as a research assistant before beginning his career in the United States.
During his tenure, Dr. Lanzinger authored "Epik im Amerikanischen Roman" in 1965, "Jason's Voyage: The Search for the Old World in American Literature" in 1989, and "America-Europe: A Transatlantic Diary, 1961-1989" in 2007. He also edited five volumes of "Americana-Austriaca" between 1966 and 1983 and contributed numerous articles to professional journals in his area of expertise.
A longstanding member of the Modern Language Association and the Thomas Wolfe Society, where Dr. Lanzinger earned a Zelda Gitlin Literary Prize for Best Article on Thomas Wolfe in 1993, he has also been the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Biographical Center in 2007 and was named to International Order of Merit in 2001. Married to Aida Schuessl since June 1954, Dr. Lanzinger is the proud father of two children. He has been showcased in more than 60 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
