A pediatric neurologist and associate professor of clinical neurology at Louisiana State University (LSU) Health New Orleans in the department of neurology, Dr. Deputy is a skilled physician and teacher who is extremely passionate about his field and especially in working with children. Having taught at the university for more than 20 years, Dr. Deputy is also an attending physician of child neurology in the Children's Hospital at LCMC Health in New Orleans and a physician at LSU Health New Orleans since 1997. He formerly served as an attending physician of child neurology at the University and Charity Hospitals in New Orleans from 1997 to 2005.
Dr. Deputy earned a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry and cell biology, cum laude, at the University of California, San Diego in 1987, a Doctor of Medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in 1992, followed by an internship, residency in pediatrics and fellowship in child neurology at the University of California, San Francisco from 1992 to 1997. He has held his medical license in Louisiana since 1997, and he holds a Louisiana Controlled and Dangerous Substances license, is a diplomate by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc., and holds certifications in neurology and child neurology from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc.
Desiring to become a full professor on campus in the next few years, Dr. Deputy also hopes to be more involved with the medical students and resident education, both in neurology and pediatrics. Throughout his career, he has written extensively in multiple different scientific and peer-reviewed journals, has authored a chapter in the book "International Neurology: A Clinical Approach," and has served as a reviewer for the Journal of Neurological Sciences, Applied Neuropsychology, and Clinical Pediatrics. Dr. Deputy has also been involved as a member of the editorial board for the Pediatric Neurology and has presented various papers at conferences and annual meetings. When he finds time, he hopes to dedicate some time to writing a book on a simplified approach to children with neurological diseases, which could be used by emergency room physicians and general pediatricians.
Dr. Deputy's success in academia has earned him much recognition over the years. He received a 2011 Allen A. Copping Award for Excellence in Teaching from the LSU School of Medicine, a 2009-2010 Aesculapian Society's Excellence in Teaching Award from LSU, was a 2007 selected fellow of the Academy for the Advancement of Educational Scholarship, and received a 2000 Nicholas Gagliano MD Outstanding Faculty Award from LSU. Dr. Deputy has been honored with several other awards as well. He was named a Top Physician by the Consumers' Research Council of America every year from 2004 to 2010 and has been named to Best Doctors in America every year since 2003.
Serving as a reviewer and advisor for Best Doctors, Dr. Deputy has also been known for his contributions as a consultant in his field and as an expert witness in child neurology on multiple legal cases for Louisiana Pediatric Neurology Consulting LLC. A longtime member of the Child Neurology Society, the Southern Society for Pediatric Research, the Southern Pediatric Neurology Society, and the American Academy of Neurology, Dr. Deputy also serves on the test material development committee with the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination of Neurology Neurosciences and the maintenance of certification committee member with the Child Neurology Society. Furthermore, he was elected as a member of the San Diego chapter of Phi Kappa Literary Society (now the San Diego Association of Phi Beta Kappa). Dr. Deputy is the father of two and enjoys music and fishing.
