With more than 30 years of dedicated service to her credit, Ms. Sappington has been retired since 1998, having previously worked as a librarian and library media specialist at the A.H. Watwood Elementary School from 1980-1998. Prior to this appointment, she was a fourth grade teacher at Sadieville Elementary School from 1968-1969. Ms. Sappington continued her teaching with the fifth grade at Tate's Creek Elementary School from 1966-1968.
Before embarking on her professional path, Ms. Sappington pursued an education at Florida Southern College, completing coursework from 1962-1964. She continued her studies at the University of Florida in 1966, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in education. Ms. Sappington concluded her studies with postgraduate coursework at the University of Alabama in 1980.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Ms. Sappington has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. A guest speaker on rare children's books on the television program "By the Way TV" in 1983, she has also been actively involved in the Tale Tellers of St. Augustine since 1999, serving as president from 2003-2005. She has also been a radio reader for the blind with WBHM Public Broadcasting in 1980, volunteer for the RSVP Read Aloud program from 2002-2004, a guest storyteller with Young Author's Conference from 1982-1994, and both a guest speaker and program presenter for the Jaycees, the Kiwanis and the Childersburg Chamber of Commerce from 1993 to 1994. Ms. Sappington was the creator and presenter for "Tellers of Tales and Sketchers of Dreams" in 1983, "Dinosaurs, Teddy Bears and Wild Things" in 1990 and "Shanghaied in the Beijing Airport" in 1994.
Since 2003, Ms. Sappington has been the librarian for the First Methodist Church in St. Augustine. She has held the roles of circle chairman and Sunday teacher for the Grace Methodist Church in Birmingham from 1992-1995. Twice a member of the visiting committee for the Southeastern Accreditation Association, she was also a program presenter with the International Literacy Association in 1983. Ms. Sappington participated in the Meals on Wheels as a delivery volunteer from 2000-2012.
Ms. Sappington remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She is a former member of the American Library Association, the International Platform Association, the American Association of School Librarians and Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education from 2005-2007, she was literary chairman for the St. Augustine chapter of the American Association of University Women. Likewise, she maintained involvement with the Alabama Library Association as publicity chairman for the children's and school division from 1991 to 1993 and chairman of National Library Week in Alabama from 1993 to 1994. Ms. Sappington has also been previously associated with People to People International, becoming a professional delegate to China in 1993.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Ms. Sappington has accrued several accolades and honors throughout her impressive career. She has been recognized as a Stutz Bearcat grantee in 1992, as well as a Title I grantee in 1991. In 1989, she was presented with an Outstanding Youth Services Award from the Alabama Library Association. Ms. Sappington was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
