In 2000, he contributed to a Civil Engineering Faculty Workshop with ADSC, the International Association of Foundation Drilling. In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Luna remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement with the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, GEER Association, Inc., the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering and the American Society of Engineering Education. He has also been a member with Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, and Chi Epsilon, The National Honor Society of Civil Engineering. Likewise, Dr. Luna was the chair of the Geo-Institute Computer Applications Committee for the American Society of Civil Engineers.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Luna has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He has been honored as a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2007 and now a Diplomate, Geotechnical Engineering (D.GE). He was also awarded the Outstanding Professional Engineer in Higher Education by the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers in 2017. Internationally, he was rewarded as a Fulbright Scholar with the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholar Board by the U.S. Department of State in 2005. At his previous institution, he received the Faculty Excellence Award and the Engineers Make a World of Difference Award from the Society of American Military Engineers in 2008, the Joseph H. Senne Jr. Faculty Achievement Award from the Academy of Civil Engineers in 2006, the Outstanding Teaching Commendation Award from the School of Extended Learning at the Missouri University of Science and Technology from 2005 to 2006, the Teaching Excellence Award from the School of Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in 2006, and the Innovative Teaching Award from the School of Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in 2005.
