A distinguished professor in the department of cell biology and the department of medicine and infectious diseases at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University, Dr. Scharff is an immunologist and cell biologist who has taught for the past 47 years. During his tenure, he dedicated eight years as the deputy director and nine years as the director at the Cancer Center and was chair of the cell biology department from 1972 to 1983.
Recognized for his research, which has paved the way for significant treatments for rheumatoid arthritis and cancer, Dr. Scharff studies how antibody-forming cells respond to antigen by undergoing somatic hypermutation and class switch recombination so they can produce higher affinity antibodies with more useful effector functions. His research has led to him publishing more than 300 articles in peer reviewed journals and chapters to several books.
Prior to entering academia, Dr. Scharff was a research associate with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and was a house officer II and IV with Harvard Medical Services, Boston City Hospitals, during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He is affiliated with several professional societies, including the American Association of Immunologists, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the National Academy of Sciences, and he holds an undergraduate degree from Brown University and an MD from New York University. He completed both his internship and residency at Boston City Hospital, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the NIH.
The recipient of an honorary DMS from Brown University in 1994, Dr. Scharff has received numerous awards. In 2015, he was recognized with a Bio Legend Herzenberg Award by the American Association of Immunologists for outstanding contributions to the field of immunology in B-cell biology. Other awards have included a 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award in Science and Technology from the Mayor of New York and a 1993 Commemorative Award from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Married to his wife since 1954 with three children and four grandchildren, Dr. Scharff has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the East.
