Joyce Solomon Moorman, EdD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Moorman is a talented musician who is currently serving as a full professor at the Borough of Manhattan Community College since 2017. Formerly an associate professor of seven years and assistant professor of seven years in the music and art department, she also taught at LaGuardia Community College, the New York City College of Technology, the Preparatory Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College, and Brooklyn School of Music, among other institutions, dating back to 1972. Completing a Bachelor of Arts at Vassar College in 1968, Dr. Moorman also earned a Master of Arts in teaching in piano at Rutgers University, the State University of New Jersey, in 1971, a Master of Fine Arts in music composition at Sarah Lawrence College in 1975, and a Doctor of Education in music at Columbia University in 1982. She later completed coursework in computer music at Brooklyn College between 1998 and 2000.

As a musician, Dr. Moorman's compositions have been performed at many locations, recently including by Louise Toppin at the University of California, Irvine, in 2017, the North/South Consonance Chamber Orchestra in 2013 and 2016, and the Richmond County Orchestra in 2012 and 2016. Other performances have included the Afro-American Chamber Music Society Orchestra, the VMM International Festival of New Music for Chorus and Orchestra at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria, and the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, among several others. She has also served as pianist for The Woodhill Players, the Longar Ebony Ensemble, the Boys Choir of Harlem, the Performing Arts Guild Ensemble and the Universal Symphony. Furthermore, Dr. Moorman, a commissioned musician numerous times, including in 2006 with the Rejoice Ensemble and in 1990 with the Cygnus Chamber Ensemble, has composed numerous works, and has served as a featured composer.

Honored many times for her musical career, Dr. Moorman has been most proud of winning a competition that was sponsored by the Vienna Modern Masters in 1998, a recording company headquartered in Vienna. She was recognized with a Performance Award by the Andy Warhol Composition Competition in 2000, received an Honorable Mention Award by the Women of Color Competition with the International Alliance for Women in Music in 2000, received multiple grants from PSC-CUNY, the Borough of Manhattan Community College and the Urban Artists Initiative, and was an annual recipient of the ASCAP Standards Panel Annual Award every year between 1990 and 2006. Additionally, her opera, "Elegies for the Fallen," received a special commendation from the Nancy Van de Vate International Opera Competition for Women Composers in 2004. Dr. Moorman is included in Helen Walker-Hill's Black Women Composers: A Century of Piano Music in 1992, Piano Music by Black Women Composers: A Catalogue of Solo and Ensemble Works in 1992, Music by Black Women Composers: A Bibliography of Available Scores in 1995, and Evelyn White's Choral Music by African American Composers in 1996.

Between 1997 and 2000, Dr. Moorman served on the advisory music panel for the New York State Council on the Arts, which was appointed to her by the Governor of New York. She also spent 21 years as a judge for the National Act-So Competition with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People beginning in 1996. Dr. Moorman is a longtime member of the American Composers Forum, the Center for Black Music Research, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Married to Wilson Moorman from 1980 until his passing in 2013, she has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women.
