With more than 40 years of experience, Dr. Huh has worked as a professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology since 1999, having served in the roles of assistant to associate professor since 1986. Prior to this appointment, he held multiple positions at the University of Michigan, including postdoctoral assistant in 1986 and research assistant from 1984 to 1986. Dr. Huh began his career as a research engineer for Oriental Precision & Engineering Company, Ltd., from 1978 to 1979.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Huh pursued an education at Seoul National University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1976, continuing his academic efforts with a Master of Science in 1978. Following these accomplishments, he was the research engineer for the Republic of Korea Army from 1979 to 1981. Dr. Huh concluded his studies at the University of Michigan in 1986, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.
His research interests include ductile fracture criterion of metals at a wide range of strain rates, material characterization of steels, metals, polymers at intermediate and high strain rates, crashworthiness of vehicles and Sheet metal forming. He was the director of Agency for Defense Development, HIPIE Research Center from 2011 to 2015 and is the director of High Speed Material Properties Data Center, National Center for Standard Reference Data in Korea. He has been a POSCO research professor since 2003. He has performed many researches on high strain-rate material properties, crashworthiness and auto-body design, sheet metal forming, failure analysis and impact analysis for dynamic deformation behavior and structural design.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Huh has participated in numerous endeavors in his community. He has been associated with the Ministry of Science and Technology for the Republic of Korea on the steering board for the G-7 Project from 1992 to 1995, the planning and evaluating board for the Industrial Technology Evaluation and Planning from 1994 to 1999, and the planning board for the Science and Technology Policy Institute in 1994. He found success with his written works as well, holding the role of editor for Metals and Materials, an International Journal since 1997 and International Journal of Automotive Technology since 2000 and editor-in-chief for International Journal of Automotive Technology from 2005 to 2013. He was also the guest editor for the International Journal of Vehicle Design from 1999 to 2001. He is now serving as an editorial board member of Journal of Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements, International Journal of Mechanical Sciences and International Journal of Material Sciences. He also joined International Impulse Forming Group as a Plenary Member since 2009. Likewise, Dr. Huh contributed multiple articles to esteemed publications in his industry.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Huh remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has been a member of the International Science Committee for the Asia-Pacific Conference on Advances in Engineering Plasticity and Its Application since 1994 and the steering committee Chair from 2008 to 2013 and the Asia Pacific Conference on Materials Processing since 1996. He also has been a member of the International Science Committee for the International Conference for Technology of Plasticity since 2008 and the Standing Advisory Board member since 2014. He maintained involvement with the Korean Society for Technology of Plasticity as editorial director from 1991 to 1999, general director from 2000 to 2002, vice-president from 2005 to 2006 and president in 2007, the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers on the editorial committee, and the Korean Society of Automotive Engineers as editorial director from 2000 to 2003 and from 2006 to 2006 vice-president from 2011 to 2012. Dr. Huh is a fellow member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Engineering Science Inc., the Korean Society for Composite Materials, and the Korean Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Huh has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. He was presented with the Korean Government Scholarship Award from the Minister of Education for the Republic of Korea in 1982 and the Korean-American Honor Scholarship Award from the Korean Embassy in U.S. in 1984. He was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award at the University of Michigan in 1984 and the Technology Innovation Award at KAIST in 2012. He was also awarded several awards of Outstanding Paper Award, Distinguished Scholar Award, Academic Award from the Korean Society for Technology of Plasticity and the Korean Society of Automotive Engineers, Contribution Award from KAIST and Most Cited Article Award from Springer-IJAT. Dr. Huh has been selected for inclusion in many editions of Who's Who in the World.
