With more than 45 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Ettensohn has been on the faculty for the math and science education program with the College of Education at the University of Kentucky since 1999, as well as a professor of geological sciences at the University of Kentucky since 1987. The director of the University of Kentucky Geology Field Camp several times between 1977 and 2017, he previously worked for the University of Kentucky as director of the honors program from 2008 to 2012, chairman of the department of geological sciences from 1997 to 2005, associate professor of geology from 1981 to 1987, acting chairman of the department of geological sciences from 1985 to 1986, and the assistant professor of geology from 1975 to 1981. The senior petroleum geologist for the Energy Programs with the Bureau of Energy Resources at the U.S. Department of State from 2013 to 2014, he served as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Illinois from 1971 to 1975, a high school math teacher for the Greenhills-Forest Park City School District in 1971, and a part-time teaching assistant for the University of Cincinnati in 1970. Dr. Ettensohn began his career as a captain with the Corps of Engineers for the U.S. Army Reserve from 1970 to 1977, during which time he held the role of combat engineer platoon leader at Ft. Belvoir, VA, from 1970 to 1971.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Ettensohn pursued an education at the University of Cincinnati, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1969. He followed this accomplishment with a Master of Science in 1970, also at the University of Cincinnati. He concluded his studies at the University of Illinois in 1975, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy. Since 1993, Dr. Ettensohn has been registered as a professional geologist by the state of Kentucky.
Beyond his efforts within the field, Dr. Ettensohn has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. For the University of Kentucky, he participated on the science advisory committee with Living Arts and Science Center since 2013, on the advisory board for the AMSTEMM Program since 2005, on the graduate faculty since 1983, on the geology graduate studies committee since 1977, as the thesis and dissertation adviser since 1976, and on the academic area advisory committee for the physical and engineering sciences from 2007 to 2009 and since 2017. Likewise, he held the title of visiting professor for the Chengdu University of Technology in 2015, visiting professor for the China University of Geosciences between 2005 and 2015, visiting professor for Escuela Superior Politecnica del Litoral from 2005 to 2006, a Fulbright lecturer with Tribhuvan University in 2006, and a Fulbright lecturer with Novosibirsk State University in 1989. A mentor for the Mathematics, Science, and Technology Center Research Program of Fayette County from 2002 to 2003, Dr. Ettensohn has been on various committees, advisory councils, and panels for the University of Kentucky as well.
A speaker, grant reviewer and consultant in his field, Dr. Ettensohn was on the Jefferson Science Fellowship Review Panel for the National Academy of Science from 2015 to 2017, as a Geological Society of America Representative for the North American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature from 2012 to 2015, on the Research Enhancement Grant Review Panel for the National Science Foundation from 2003 to 2006 and from 2013 to 2014, and on the Science Advisory Council with the Appalachian Math-Science Partnership from 2003 to 2007. He also contributed to the committee on research and policy with the Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute from 1998 to 2001, as chair of the review committee for the Kentucky Geological Survey in 1999, as an invited session chair from the International Symposium on Deltas in Cairo, Egypt, in 1999, and with the President's Initiative on Undergraduate Education for the University of Kentucky from 1998 to 1999. Additionally, Dr. Ettensohn found much success with written works as well, working on the editorial board for Kaleidoscope since 2008, as technical editor for the Journal of Paleontology from 1994 to 1997, as a textbook reviewer, and as a contributor of articles to professional journals.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Ettensohn remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. On the North America Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature since 2012, he has maintained involvement as a scientific advisor for the Kentucky Paleontological Society since 1993, vice president and on the board of directors for the Kentucky State Museum of Natural History since 1991, session convener for the meetings of the Geological Society of America since 1979, and as faculty advisor for Sigma Gamma Epsilon since 1976. Dr. Ettensohn notably held the positions of vice president for the Kentucky Academy of Science in 2018, president of the University of Kentucky Chapter with the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi from 2015 to 2017, president of the Geological Society of Kentucky in 2016, chair of the geology section for the Kentucky Academy of Science in 2008 and 2015, and secretary of the geology section for the Kentucky Academy of Science in 2007 and 2014.
A geologist with the specialist peer review committee for the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars from 2007 to 2010, Dr. Ettensohn previously served the Kentucky section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists as president in 2011, president-elect in 2010, and the vice president in 2009. He was also a member of the European Geosciences Union, the Geological Society of Washington, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the American Geophysical Union and the American Geological Institute. Likewise, he was involved with the International Association of Sedimentologists, the International Palaeontological Association, the Palaeontological Association and the Paleontological Research Institution. Dr. Ettensohn has excelled with his efforts in conjunction with the Paleontological Society, the National Association of Geology Teachers and the National Earth Science Teachers Association.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Ettensohn has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. A fellow of the Geological Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he was recognized as an Embassy Science Fellow for the U.S. Department of State in 2014, a Fenneman Fellow from 1969 to 1970, a fellow of the University of Illinois from 1971 to 1974, and a Jefferson Science Fellow of the U.S. Department of State from 2013 to 2014. A grantee of the Geological Society America, he obtained grants from the U.S. Department of Energy from 1976 to 1981, the National Science Foundation from 1987 to 1990, the U.S. Bureau of Mines from 1990 to 1991, the Kentucky Council on Higher Education from 1998 to 2002, and the National Science Foundation with the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research from 2002 to 2005. A Wurlitzer Foundation Fellow from 1965 to 1969 and a McMicken Honorary Scholar from 1965 to 1966 with the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Ettensohn was honored as Educator of Year by the Eastern Section of the American Association of Professional Geologists in 2008, a Distinguished Professor by the University of Kentucky from 2013 to 2014, Kentucky Geologist of the Year by the Geological Society of Kentucky from 2013 to 2014, and a Summer Field Camp Scholar of the University of Illinois in 1968.
Earning the Fulbright Lecturer Award from the U.S. Government in 1989 and 2006, Dr. Ettensohn received the A.I. Levorsen Best Paper Award from Eastern Section of the American Association of Professional Geologists in 2006 and 2007, the Grover E. Murray Distinguished Educator Award from the American Association of Professional Geologists in 2018, the Service Award from the Kentucky Society of Professional Geologists in 2011, the Superlative Award for Distinguished University Scientist from the Kentucky Academy of Science in 2010, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kentucky Section from the American Institute of Professional Geologists in 2009. He was presented with the Educator of the Year Award from the Eastern Section of the American Association of Professional Geologists in 2008, the Tarr Award from the University of Cincinnati in 1969, and awards from the Bucher Fund in Geology at the University of Cincinnati from 1966 to 1968. Dr. Ettensohn was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
