Currently the George Delacorte Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University, Dr. Howard has influenced students and teachers alike with her passions for literature, drama, feminism, new historicism, and Marxism. Prior to her present appointment in 1988, Dr. Howard was an associate professor at Syracuse University from 1981 to 1988, and an assistant professor at Syracuse University from 1975 to 1981.
In addition to her primary roles, Dr. Howard has served academic institutions in various capacities. From 2008 to 2011, she was head of the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. In addition, she was appointed Vice Provost for Diversity Initiatives from 2004 to 2007 and elected the president of the Shakespeare Association of America from 1999 to 2000. Dr. Howard was also the former director of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at Columbia University from 1996 to 1999.
In preparation for her applauded career, Dr. Howard obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University in 1970 and a Master of Philosophy from the University of London in 1972. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Renaissance drama from Yale University in 1975. Her research has focused on Shakespearean drama using feminist and Marxist critical approaches.
As a leading expert in the field, Dr. Howard maintains affiliation with numerous professional organizations, including the Shakespeare Association of America and the Modern Language Association, where she was a member of the executive committee of the Shakespeare division from 1995 to 2000, and now serves as a member of the MLA Executive Council, 2018-2023. She remains a senator of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Dr. Howard has authored over 50 essays, edited eight collections of essays and written or co-written five books including Shakespeare's Art of Orchestration (1984); The Stage and Social Struggle in Early Modern England (1994); Engendering A Nation: A Feminist Account of Shakespeare's English Histories (1997); Theater of a City (2007); Marx and Shakespeare (2012). She is a co-editor of The Norton Shakespeare, the third edition of which appeared in 2015.
In recognition of her exceptional accomplishments, Dr. Howard has been presented with numerous honors and accolades throughout her career. In 2016, she was awarded an honorary PhD by Brown University. In addition, she has been the recipient of Guggenheim, Folger, NEH, Mellon, Newberry Library (National Endowment of the Humanities) and Huntington Fellowships. Married to James M. Baker since 1972, Dr. Howard is the mother of two children and grandmother of three grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys going to the theatre.
