A respected voice in the field of medical education, he has been appointed as professor in plastic surgery and neurosurgery at NYU, an adjunct professor of cell biology and pathology with the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University since 2001. Dr. Chiu had served in leadership positions with a wide range of organizations, notably among them, presidency of The American Society for Reconstructive Surgery, American Society for Peripheral Nerve, The New York Society for Surgery of the Hand, The New York Regional Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, The New York Clinical Society, The Sunderland Society and the chairmanship of the Board of Directors of The World Association for Plastic Surgeons of Chinese Descent. For more than three decades, Dr. Chiu has been honored as The President Emeritus of the Chinese American Medical Society. He was also recognized as the primary founder and elected as founding president of the Federation of Chinese American and Chinese Canadian Medical Societies in 1994.
A diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Chiu chose to pursue a career in medicine as a way to make a direct impact on people by solving their problems and having the opportunity to see the results. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Missouri - St. Louis in 1969 and MD from Columbia University in 1973. Dr. Chiu went on to receive additional training through Barnes Hospital, where he completed an internship in 1974 and residency in general surgery in 1977. Upon completing a residency in plastic surgery through the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in 1979, he joined the NYU Langone Medical Center as a fellow in 1980 and a faculty member in 1981. Early in his career, Dr. Chiu was credited with authoring, "Introduction to Microsurgery: A Lab Manual," which was published in 1985. In 1989, he was recruited back to Columbia to serve first as the associate director, then the director of plastic surgery. During his tenure he inaugurated two endowed chairs in Reconstructive surgery. In 2001, he returned to NYU where he remains till present. He has published close to 100 original articles and text book chapters and also served as an editorial board member with the Journal of Reconstructive Microsurgery for nearly two decades. He is currently an associate editor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global.
Dr. Chiu currently holds the title of chief of hand services, director of hand surgery fellowship, director of the New York Nerve Center of the Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery the NYU Langone Medical Center. He is conducting a private practice as director of the Center for Restorative Surgery in New York City.
In recognition of his contributions to research in peripheral nerve surgery, particularly in conceptualization and validation of autogenous venous nerve conduit (AVNC) as a clinical modality for bridging of peripheral nerve gaps. Dr. Chiu was awarded the Hanno Millesi Award in 2010. Dr. Chiu was also a recipient of the Sushruta Award for his stupendous achievement as a clinician, teacher and researcher from the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India in 2013, Outstanding Leadership Award from the Chinese American Medical Society in 2016, and most recently the lifetime achievement award from The New York Regional Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World. As Dr. Chiu moves forward with his career, he intends to devote more time to traveling, pursuing artistic and musical endeavors, and writing about surgical, medical, philosophical literature and poetry.
