With more than 50 years of professional experience, Ms. Gee retired in 2006, having most recently worked as co-publisher and owner of the New American Publishing Company from 2002 to 2006. Prior to obtaining this role, she held a number of teaching positions with Hayfork Elementary School, including as a chapter 1 specialist from 1990 to 1993, a teacher from 1981 to 1990, and a substitute teacher from 1977 to 1981.
Before beginning her career as a teacher, Ms. Gee was writer with the Redding Record Searchlight from 1976 to 1977, a public information officer with West Valley College from 1975 to 1976, and a writer with the San Jose Mercury News in 1974. From 1973 to 1974, she was director of Public Relations for Arts and Lectures with the University of California, Berkeley. Previously, Ms. Gee has served as an editor and promotion manager with Buildings Systems Development from 1970 to 1971 and an editor with the Bay Area Bulletin of the Pacific Telephone Company from 1968 to 1970.
Ms. Gee found success as an advertising assistant with the Richmond Independent from 1967 to 1968, and she was the society editor of the Berkeley Daily Gazette from 1965 to 1967. Before relocating to California, she was a reporter with the Wayland Town Crier in Massachusetts from 1963 to 1964. Ms. Gee began her career at the Harvard Medical School Biophysics Laboratory as a purchasing agent from 1956 to 1957.
Having developed an interest in writing and teaching from an early age, Ms. Gee was further inspired to enter her industry by her love of children and desire to work with them. She pursued an education at Radcliffe College, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1954. She concluded her studies at Harvard University, where she earned a Master of Education in elementary education in 1956. Certified as a teacher in the states of Massachusetts and California, Ms. Gee is also certified by Radcliffe College in a publishing procedures course.
An active member of her community, Ms. Gee has been involved with numerous organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She is a member of the national Education Association, the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and Pi Lambda Theta. The founder and former member of the board of directors for the Kellogg Pioneer Cemetery Foundation, she has written several books and contributed to numerous newsletters. The author of "Springer's Quest, A Chinook Salmon Story," and "Springer's Quest, Life of a Pacific Chinook Salmon," Ms. Gee was inspired in her writing by renowned natural writer and activist Rachel Carson.
Throughout her career, Ms. Gee has been recognized for her contributions, including with a Layout Award from the California Newspaper Publishers Association. A Christa McAuliffe Fellow of the United States Department of Education, she was also presented with an Award for Excellence from the United Crusade Campaign of the Bay Area California Industrial Editors. An avid athlete well into her retirement, Ms. Gee was a swimming medalist for the Yuma, Arizona Senior Games for six years in a row, and a medalist at the United States Masters Swimming Nationals in 2008.
In 2011, Ms. Gee broke the U.S. Masters Swimming Long Distance National Relay Record, and in 2014, she placed first in the National Relay. She has been featured in numerous honors publications, including Who's Who in the World seven times, Who's Who in America eight times, Who's Who of American Women three times, and Who's Who in American Education three times. Furthermore, Ms. Gee was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
